• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Modeling experimental morphing wing sections

Im not a modeler but i am curious if its possible to model wing structures like ailerons flaps etc as a hingeless morphing shape like those being experimented on by NASA? Thanks.
 
Could possibly be done using skin and bones animations, but I wouldn't like to try!
 
no change shape allowed in FSX, not sure in latest P3D, thought it still same as FSX.
 
From what I can tell, this "morphing shape" is nothing but a joint between a rigid and movable surface (a wing and a flap) where the gap between them is filled with a collapsible, accordion-like structure. There is no organic shape-shifting, as the title would suggest, and thus, given necessary skills, this is rather easily re-created using skin and bones animation.
 
Interesting this needs a closer look, and yes if a hinged joint could be skinned over somehow that is pretty much what the real world application for the most part is, or a long succession of actuators and hinges enclosed. Thanks guys.
 
I seem to recall that the Wright brothers did that with their wing warping technique... :rotfl:

Not quite true. Using skin and bones, you can change shapes easily. That's how the wing bending is done in FSX - there are no external mechanical linkages, they are all internal, represented by bones. The wing definitely changes shape. You can also have a lot more pronounced effect, literally changing shapes from sphere to box to cylinder.

Yes, you can absolutely make those objects using skin/bone setup. In fact, I need something similar, but since I consider it "eye candy", it is on a backburner. Examples in SDK are wing flex on DC-3 and a flag waving on the oil rig platform.
 
Yes. You make the wing a 'skin' (the mesh is mapped with a 'skin' material' ) which is then animated via Bones. You might wish to look up tutorials on skin animations in 3ds Max to get an idea. Arms on a person would work the exact same way. The wings of the racing glider in FSX use 'flex' technology (skin tech in the gaming industry).

You just cannot use a ton of Vertices or it freaks out. Seems that there are limitations on numbers of vertices per animation zone(s).
