• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Modifying/Replacing Mesh

I am trying to smooth out an area of scenery that is already relatively flat, but is sloping. I am exploring several alternatives:
1. Smooth the mesh - Is there any tool that will do this?
2. Replace with Poly3(?) mesh - Is there a tool to easily create Poly3 mesh, or is this a hand-drawn effort? (I anticipate using a maximum of say 64 points)
3. Flatten the mesh and overlay with GMAX landable texture.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Phil

Hi Phil,

I don't know what you mean with smoothing? But if you want to make it fully flat, I think placing a simple LWM flatten is the fastest way to do so. All the other approaches sound more complicated, but maybe I do not understand your idea of "smooth" correct.

Arno,
I am trying to preserve some of the character of the underlying terrain and to avoid the "flat as a pool table" effect. Ideally, there would be some kind of program where I could take existing mesh and apply a polynomial regression formula to smooth out the data.
I could either modify the existing mesh or create a LWMPoly3/LWMPoint3 mesh to override the existing mesh.
Is there a tool for doing so? Something to read, modify and write the data?
Thanks,
Phil

Hi Phil,

I have never heard of a tool that allows you to do that. As you will probably now Ground2k4 allows you to remesh an area, but it does not use the current mesh.

Thanks. That's what I thought. I have used Microdem to make manual changes to the mesh and I have heard that you can use BlackArt to make some changes. I'm surprised that no one has come up with a tool that will import the mesh into a 3d editor like gmax and export it as mesh.

That would indeed be great! But the fact that noone has done it so far leeds me to thinking it would be rather difficult to create such a tool. :(

I tried out some programs that convert dem to dxf, thinking that I could import the dxf into gmax and modify it. However, I am using a 10 meter dem, and the number of points was apparently too large, even when I reduced the area to a couple of miles square.
Nevertheless, I believe that the resolution of the 10 meter dem is far greater than what is displayed in fs2004. As I recall, the horizontal resolution is around 100 feet, so a mile should include 53 x 53 datapoints, about 2,800 points - clearly within the capability of gmax.
Is there a way to reduce the number of data points in the 10 meter dem so that it more closely approximates what is displayed in fs2004?
Thanks,
Phil
