• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Moire Patterns

First attempt at generating thumbnails from object libraries today and I noticed that most if not all have, what for a lack of terms I would call a moire pattern.

Most of these will disappear if I rotate the object so that the area with the pattern is full front. Unfortunately, that's not practical when creating the thumbnail because you want a perspective view of the object.

Any solutions or is it something to live with?

Thanks,
Ernie

Hi,

That is a well known effect of textures that have many horizontal or vertical stripes. I don't think there is much you can do about it, even in the sim you can get this effect. MCX already uses texture mipmaps which should reduce this effect. Maybe it helps if you change the zoom level or thumbnail resolution a bit?

Will play around a bit to see if I can lessen it. Honestly though I should be thanking you.. so thank you.. for creating a tool that will generate thumbnails of the object libraries.

I will check in the code if the mipmaps are rendered optimally.

Hi Arno:

This thread shows Moire patterns in MCX- and to a lesser etxent in MSFS- with use of a typical "corrugated" cladding hangar texture:

Is it possible anything might be done to also improve MIPMAP rendering when mapped onto 3D models compiled / output for FS display as well ?

Thanks in advance for any further enhancements you might be able to implement via MCX for such potentially problematic texture images. :wizard:

Hi,

I have checked the mipmap implementation in the MCX preview, but I have to say it is a bit crude. I am going to update it so that the preview properly shows the mipmaps. That should hopefully reduce these effects and make it more similar to how it is shown in the sim.

Thank you for taking a look. As I said, I can live with it, but it is still very much appreciated..
