• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Mouse rectangle problem/observation

Something to add. I'm using GMax for FSXA

All parts were given “reset scale” and reset transform” as soon as I realised that there was a problem. There are no hidden, transparent or “see-through” parts. No parts are anywhere near the line-of-sight.
None of the animated parts are textured.

This is what happened with two different VCs

First VC: the mouse rectangles stopped working after I added a [Vcockpit06] section. The normal (i.e. non $*.bmp) texture mapping was also messed up.
I found duplicate material names. After re-naming them, the textures and mouse rectangles all worked properly. Sorted.

Second VC: 9 Vcockpit sections. All displayed 2D gauges with no problems.
No mouse rectangles worked. There were no duplicate material names.
All the mouse rectangles worked when I commented out all of the Vcockpit sections.
I reinstated each section one by one.
When I reinstated [Vcockpit09], all the mouse rectangles stopped working.

I commented out [Vcockpit09] and swapped its’ contents with other Vcockpit sections. Everything still worked. The 9th Vcockpit section, no matter where it is or what it contains, disabled all of the mouse rectangles.

Am I doing something wrong, or have I found a GMax/FSX limitation?

p.s. many thanks to Hairyspin for your warning about duplicate material names. You prevented a serious brain overtemp. Symptoms include greying of the hair and a belief in gremlins.

I've had up to 25 vcockpit entries so you can certainly use more than 8 vcockpits.

Now, the question is, do each of your vcockpit's have mouse areas? Because mine didn't.

Also be aware of this. If you add a vcockpit and make it 1024x1024 pixels in size it will gobble up about 50MB of memory. So if you have 9 vcockpits that are 1024x1024 then you are eating about 450MB in memory just in vcockpits. I found this out when my aircraft with many vcockpits was making FSX use about 1.3GB of memory instead of the more usual 800MB. It required a reduction in many of the vcockpits down to 256x256 or 512x512 textures.

Hi AlanWingnut!

I have found that if you apply only simple materials to your VC that mouse rectangles do not work correctly. So I would suggest you to apply textures to your VC and then re-test in FSX and see if that fixes your mouse rectangle issue.

Thanks, Kris:)

Thanks for your comments.

Only one of my Vcockpit sections has mouse rectangles. The rest have 2D gauges.
There is a 3D part with a mouse rectangle that is not on a textured part: it works fine now, but not when I had 9 Vcockpit sections.

I am aware of the memory thing: on first startup the fps is around 0.5. It goes back to normal after I shut down FSX and re-start it again. Very odd.

Krispy
I'll give it a shot.
What bamboozles me is why textures (of any sort) affect mouse rectangles. My brain (what's left of it) suggests that 3D parts should be independant of 2D gauges and their $ textures.
I am obviously wrong!
