• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Multiplayer Aircraft Display Issues

All,

I have read numerous forum posts on this and other forums, but I just can't find a definite answer to the following:

How does FSX determine what aircraft to display for multiplayer aircraft?

I did find a post that suggested that FSX firsts uses the title= field and if it is an exact match, will display that aircraft. If it is not an exact match, it will use engine type, then number of engines, and then aircraft weight and reference cruise speed. It also indicated that in some cases it will display an airplane for a helo and visa-versa.

Does FSX not use the atc_model= field for anything in determining the aircraft to display?

I am attempting to assemble various "AI" aircraft that can be placed in a subfolder in SimObjects to correctly display the other persons aircraft. While this seems to work with FSInn on VATSIM, as you can select which aircraft to display if there is a problem, there doesn't seem to be a way to do that in the FSX Multiplayer mode.

While having the correct title= field is an option, there could be hundreds of variants of a title, thus this just doesn't seem viable. The other issue is that you can not have duplicate title= in SimObjects, thus you can just put an "AI" type copy of a flyable aircraft without FSInn having an error. Not sure what the effects are for FSX Multiplayer with duplicate titles.

Any assistance or advice would be greatly appreciated.

How does FSX determine what aircraft to display for multiplayer aircraft?

As far as i know FSX only uses the "title=" in the "aircraft.cfg"..then if nothing works then "engine_type" (as you stated)...

Does FSX not use the atc_model= field for anything in determining the aircraft to display?

As far as i know, it doesnt....if you have two computers and have FSX in them ...i suggest you to do a test to figure it out...you can have a PC with for example, a F-16 in SimObjects, then in the other PC not having it...and let them connect thru LAN multiplayer (in FSX)..then see what happens...

VATSIM and FSINN's multiplayer architecture is different than the one that FSX multiplayer uses. They establish different connections and then they do a kind of model matching calculation for properly display the aircraft... thats why the matches are more closest to the reality than the default FSX multiplayer sessions.

It's not much information but its my opinnion from what i know...hope it helps...

Thanks Manuel, I will test out some scenarios and see what I can come up with. It is certainly unfortunate that the atc_model isn't used, as that would be the simplest way to determine an aircraft type. Oh well.

Have you uncovered any tricks on this. There is a substitutions file, but I can't find any info on it. There has got to be a way to tell FSX Multiplayer what planes to use as default.

Still no luck with getting multiplayer aircraft to show correctly. Some testing proved that even exact matching titles did not work.
