• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

multiple textures on same library object?

Hi,

I wonder if it is at all possible to apply different textures to a single library object mdl without having to alter the source file every time.
I read Arno saying some time ago you could change the GUID yourself, but where? In the source file? And in case it is possible to change the GUID, does it matter what the new GUID is like? Say I change a 2 somewhere and make a 3 of it?
You will have understood by now that I am no Gmax guru at all. I am still creating scenery the old fashioned way or using existing library objects and that puts a severe limit to my 'creative' possibilities.
At least retexturing an existing library object (withouot loosing the origuinal texture) would give me some extra possibilities.
Or do I really have to go through the agony of learning Gmax?

Hi Roby,

It is probably easiest to make your own models from scratch if you are not happy with the available ones.

Technically you could change the texture used in an object and give it a new GUID, but unless you are the author of the original object that would be against the copyright of the object. So you could never distribute your changed object.

When you want to assign a new GUID to an object you would have to create a completely new, random one. Just changing a number is not the advised way.

Hey Arno,

Technically I already changed the texture.
To give you an example: as I am Belgian (no joked, please), I changed the aninated US flag I found in your download section, into a Dutch one with the EU flag underneath for use in my own Tarin Kowt scenery. But, now I cannot use the US flag anymore.
That is, among other things, why I would want to have the possibility of multiple textures for a library object.
I do not have the intention to distribute the new library object. It wiould be purely for my own enjoyment.
Your in for some heavy thunderstorms tonight, by the way.

Hi Roby,

If you don't plan to distribute you could take a look at my ModelConverterX tool. It will allow you to load in the MDL file and using the material editor you can assign a different texture name. Be sure to change the GUID as well (now that I write this, I am not sure if that feature is implemented already).

Yes, I see. It will take more than a few minutes to add it, else I would have done it right now :). But it is on the list to be added in the future.

OK, in the end it was not that hard. You'll find the capability to edit the GUID in tonight's development build.

Unbelievable!
You wink and you get served (je wordt hier op je wenken bediend)!
Great and thank you a lot.

Roby
