• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSXA Naming convention

I have been having stop and go fits trying to get photo scenery to display in FSX. I've used Resample with geotiffs and bitmaps. I'm pretty sure my input is correct. Resample runs without errors and everything appears good but rendering in FSX has only worked on a couple of occasions. I couldn't seem to get consistent rendering with all my variations, until last night.

This is still a work in-progress but I have a few questions.

Does the name of the compiled bgl make any difference? I've been using names with underscores (BWG_KY.bgl) without luck. I compiled 8 bitmap images in one bgl and none showed in FSX using the name with the underscore. Last night, on a whim and with nothing left to lose, I removed the underscore in the name listed in the inf file. I only tried it once but I used all the same input, dropped the underscore and two of the 8 images appeared. This seemed pretty odd to me.

Can the FSX and SDK installation location have impact on this process. I'd originally installed FSX and the original SDK in the "Program Files" directory. I've been using FSX like this for years. I've read and unstood that Vista causes problems with this type setup. Because I had so much custom content, and no issues, I installed FSXA and it's SDK in the same directories a couple of years ago. Until now it hasn't seemed to be an issue. I've had no trouble with extensive AI traffic or payware aircraft but I've only gotten into terrain recently.

Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi Tom.

As far as I have determined, the naming convention of photoreal for FSX would have no influence. Most problems with photoreal have to do with the LOD = command.

With very good data, I use LOD = 12, 19 This is the range the photoreal should display in. The default LOD for the landclass tiles is 13... so I am making sure the defaults don't show.

It's possible a weak videocard might not be able to display the photoreal due to lag or memory constraints,

i would also recommend opening your bgl files in the tmfviewer from the sdk. You can see the photo for each LOD.

Thanks for the info. Yes, I've tried many combinations of LOD's including the ones mentioned, although I haven't gone as high as 19. All the metadata info makes the images appear to be 1 meter/pixel. LOD19 would take a very long time and make a very large bgl, even with compression. I'll try it with one bitmap and see what happens. That's what's confusing. I'll get partial display, no display, and many things in between. I can't seem to find a pattern to build on.

My video card is a ATI 5700 w/1G ram and my PC is quad core w/6G of ram. The numerous different bgl's are viewable in TMFViewer.

It's may be something with trying to render multiple images flush against each other. Is it possible that a tiny bit of overlap is causing the issue? The original images are UTM/WGS83. I've reprojected the images into WGS84. I then gathered the image's data for use with the bitmaps. It's possible something's getting lost in translation. Next, I'll gather the data from the UTM images and turn those directly into bitmaps.

I'll post anything worth reporting.

Thanks

Overlapping images do not cause a problem. Set overlay transparency to mid-way in tmfViewer to see the overlaps.

Wow! I finally got the scenery to show in FSX. In fact, I think it was good all along.

Each time I'd compile, I'd look using tmfviewer, move the file, fire up FSX, and jump in, all in about a minute or so. With as many attempts as I was doing I decided to work with one image to save time. After generating a bgl with the single image I fired up FSX, 5 images displayed. Whoa, where did that come from. I'd checked and rechecked and there were no duplicate bgl's. I restarted FSX, nothing showed this time, not the 5 or the single. Just for giggles I went back to my 8 image setup and went again. This time, after starting FSX, I waited a few minutes before loading the scenery. What do you know, it was there.

Needless to say I need to do a little maintenance. I'll defrag, run diagnostics, and pray FSX isn't corrupted. I'd hate to reinstall with all I've added. Something's truly squirrely and I need to clear it up before I go further.

Thanks again.

Oh, by the way, take a look at Bowling Green, Kentucky.
