• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

MSFS20 Need some insight

Since I am not a developer.....lack certain skills...since the updates from Asobos tend to mess up stuff...Am I correct in the fact that the taxiways in order to be correct not need to be named "PATH" and not "TAXI"...when that happens.. the "APRON" underneath is removed and has to hand drawn?

This is a post from a friend at Flightsim.to who redid KGSO:
I think that I just found your problem. You used Taxi as the PathType for your taxiways. That apparently doesn't work for MSFS. You have to use PathType PATH and draw the taxiway using Aprons. It's a pain but that is the ASOBO way. Keep in mind that ADE was created from P3D/FSX which are different and it is still in Alpha testing.
You might be able to get away with laying a PATH over the top of the Taxiway to give the aircraft a path to use.

Is there no way to "code" the Taxiways with "PATH" instead of "TAXI"....and NOT loose the apron. My problem with along what I have mentioned is I can't draw for sh.. and is there other items I am missing. I have my ai's sitting in parking but they disappear when they back up and my traffic doesn't go anywhere and nothing landing?

The original airport is a piece of junk "kint".....

Thanks everyone and Best Wishes!!

Taxiway paths should be of the type TAXI, not PATH. Your friend is wrong - it works perfectly for MSFS and Asobo has never screwed that up. The TaxiWay Path (the line between two TaxiWay Points) by default draws a surface which covers underlying aprons. Changing the type of the path does not affect the apron. You only need to untick the Draw Surface in the Properties of the path to get rid of that surface and have a functioning TaxiWay Path on top of your apron! The easiest way to make a working taxiway is this:
  1. Make two TaxiWay Points
  2. Change the path between them to your liking for width, surface, center line, edge lines, lighting etc. by clicking on the path and changing it's properties. The path should have the type TAXI.
  3. Click on the last point to select it, then activate one click adding (tick the box near the Add button) and continue adding TaxiWay Points from there - your settings for the path properties will be remembered.
  4. Deactivate one click adding when that specific part of the taxiway is done
If you already made all the points and paths you need to select each path (click on the line between the points) and change it's type to TAXI and it's properties to your liking.

To make a working taxiway network on your airport you must do the following. If this is not done correctly the ATC and the AI traffic will not work correctly on the airport!
  • Add at least one TaxiWay Parking spot
  • Build the taxiway from near the parking all the way to the runway
  • Make a path of the type RUNWAY along the center line of the entire runway and assign the runway number to it. (You may split it up if you have several taxiway entry points - see note below!)
  • Connect the RUNWAY endpoint(s) (and midpoints) to the nearest TAXI point (see note below on how to do it)
  • Connect your parking spot(s) to the nearest TAXI point(s) with a path of the type PARKING
  • Change one TaxiWay Point on each taxiway entry to the runway, near the runway to the type HOLD SHORT and set it's properties as desired
NOTE! Your entire taxiway network has to be "in one piece" - there should not be any separate parts but all parts have to be connected to each other. when you have two different types drawn (parking spot and taxiway or taxiway and runway or two separate TAXI paths) you should connect them by selecting one point on each (click on one point, hold left SHIFT down and click on the other), then right-click and select Create Path from the popup menu.

So there should be absolutely no unconnected parts in your network! It does not work to have two TaxiWay Points very close to each other - they must be connected. If you have made separate TaxiWay Paths you have to connect them by selecting the two adjacent points and then right click and select Merge from the popup menu.

I hope I remembered everything and that this helps you... :)

I have personally made all my airports using taxiways with no surface, then added an apron for the taxiways to make the surface. In this way I have much more control on how the taxiways look - the apron has more settings than the taxiway paths.

WOW... So i take this is using Dev Mode? (one click adding)....Thanks..trying to absorb this :) I am 71 so it takes me a tad longer..Make a video...lol

Greets and Best Wishes!!!

Yes, using dev mode! You'll work it out - you are only two years older than me.. 😄 (But yes, I have been making sceneries since the very early 2000's...)

If the network is not connected:
NOTE! will it show up as an error? It use to be red before the last SDK update but now I see no errors related to this..is that good? I have changed all the taxiways to "TAXI"..

I guess I am at a loss. Have managed to use Dev Mode for things. Use ADE as well but the default MSFS Kint airport shows all the taxiways as "Path".. using ADE when I change from "taxi" to "path".. I loose all my pavements 9aprons) under the taxipoints....I think the pavements show in MSFS..got to look again. It doesn't show in the scenery for my updated scenery for KINT. Guess I have to draw those pavements? Any way in the updated scenery.. At a loss.. my ai's lights come on, they backup and disappear... In the original everything is fine but then I would have redo all of the scenery all over again for the original and have worked on this for two years...

Any ideas on disaapearing plane(s)

So, you want to designate path instead of taxi, but you don't want to redraw all the needed aprons? How far off are the default aprons from your new taxiways?

I am thinking you could just rip the aprons from the default code (made by ADE) and just paste it into your airport XML with notepad, and voila... you have aprons. Then you could adjust the aprons as needed in either DevMode or ADE.

Well...hum..you have a thought there @rhumbaflappy... where is the xml located that I would paste this too..Data folder or where? Also how would I determine which vertex it is. I see the info in properties but not a lat/Lon? Greets... I will let you know how it goes.... But I still don't know why my ai's keeps backing up and disappearing? Is that something Jon could entertain or no that if you change from Taxi to Path that it would retain the apron versus going byebye..Just a thought..not a computer coder kinda guy.

Best Wishes

Zip the whole Project, and attach it, or give a link to a cloud saved file, and I can do the dirty work.

Dick..I don't expect you to do that. The airport is radically changed.. The runway (15/33) is longer. I will work thru it.. The taxiway and the two exits from runway 33..

maybe something will show up that is causing airplanes to backup and disappear.
Where do i send the check :)

You're right about the changes. The old aprons won't help you. You'll need to draw them from scratch.
You might consider making the closed runway as an apron. The compiler shows a warning that it needs taxiways.

Disappearing AI aircraft is a typical sign of errors in the taxi network. I you follow my list of requirements above it should work... No loose ends whatsoever are allowed in the network!

This is also my suspicion. Get rid of the closed runway and make an apron to simulate the close runway.

I have worked on scenery. I have literally removed runway 4/22 and I am getting no errors for taxiways and not connected to network main graph stuff..Use to get them in the old sdk and no yellow errors either. maybe in the clear now?

We'll see,
Thanks @rhumbaflappy and @WildLynxPilot
