• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

New computer - missing stuff....

I am thinking that it has been so long since I set up a computer for FS and design work, that I must be missing things on this new computer..

Can someone give me a quick review of what things I need to download and install to make everything work right?

I would have thought the new system came with all the newest stuff, but apparently I was way wrong.. The version of java that came stock on it wasn't even close to the new version online. And I mean by 3 major versions!!!!

I do know I need to install the SDK from the FS dvd... so doing that now... any other ideas??? The system is win7 64bit.

Thanks!

First ... install FSX to a non-standard location (preferably a second drive)

This will save you enormous headaches later with permissions issues and the like

Install FSX
Update to SP1
Update to Acceleration / SP2

Install the SDK
Update SDK to SP1a
Update SDK to SP2

Install Tools:
ADE
SBuilderX
Gmax
Copy the Gamepack to the appropriate directory

Other stuff you have

Consider uicoreautomation.dll fix for FSX

Update drivers (Vid Card and Sound) ... preferably the WHQL ones from the manufacturer.

That's about it ...

Thanks...and I don't install anything ever to my c drive. Flight sim is on it's own drive. I have not used the c drive in probably 10 years..unless windows or an app MAKES something install there.. I won't put anything there..

from MS web site:

FSX SDK - SP2 Update

This update includes the changes to the FSX Software Development Kit required for those developers who have installed FSX Service Pack 2.

IMPORTANT: If you have already installed Flight Simulator X: Acceleration expansion pack, do not install the SDK Update for Service Pack 2.

So I am guessing that I will NOT install the sp2 update... But still will install the sp1a update... I guess....\

Hi Greg,

There is a Acceleration Pack version of the SDK on the Acceleration Pack disk. You need to install that one, instead of SP2.

Ok..guess I am ignorant on many things os7 and FS.... What is uicoreautomation.dll fix?

I find references to it on a few sites... but every one refers to some other post...and I can NOT find those other posts that go into detail... so if you know, please tell me..

I am guessing I am having an issue related...because I ran FSX yesterday, was on a 4 hour flight. About 3 hours in, I had to leave...I paused the flight. turned off the monitors and left. Got home about 10 hours later and was a nightmare to get the computer to respond.. Then, once I finally was able to force quit FS, UT, and ActiveSky... the computer ran like a dog. Web pages took 5-10 minutes to load... I tried to open a folder...that took almost 12 minutes.. To open a file was over 30 minutes...and of course, once I clicked on something, I was stuck for many minutes...couldn't do anything.. finally rebooted, and now all is well.. I have read about the OS7 OOM errors and that they should NOT happen... well, apparently, my lowly 4 gig machine is getting them with whatever is going on...

So...any help fixing this odd problem would be amazingly helpful.. Thanks in advance..

ps: anything I need to edit in the cfg file for these problems? And where in win7 do I find the cfg file hiding... XP was way more straight forward than 7, but I really find I love os7!!!

Under Windows 7, users get an occasional CTD (Crash to Desktop) when accessing menu bar (sometimes after a 3rd or 4th attempt)

This is due to an incompatible version of uicoreautomation.dll

The solution is to replace this file, and register the new file.

I would see how you go, and do this only if you are having this particular problem.

That has happened once so far... But I think I have definitely found the OOM problem I read about on some other sites... Many people talk about it nailing them towards the end of flights and on approaches...

I know when I had my big problem yesterday, when I was finally able to get my task manager open and force close all my fs programs, it did not help at all.. Even a couple hours after closing the programs, the computer was basically useless.. And the biggest processor hog I had during all that (after the fs apps shutdown) was firefox at 03. And nothing was using much memory at all.

I have seen this many times on computers I have worked on and know that once a program drains the computer of memory because of a bug or whatever, that memory rarely comes back just by closing the program.. Almost always will require a reboot to fix the problem. As it did in my situation...

So.. if there is a memory bug in FSX or any of the other fs related programs I was running at the time, I am hoping I can find a fix for it.
