• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

new to repainting

How can I repaint aircraft using only Photoshop. Most of the tutorials of repainting uses Paintshop which i don't have.

The textures used to repaint aircraft are essentially .bmp files. You can open an existing texture just as you would any .bmp in photoshop, but you must keep a few things in mind...

1. If you rotate the image to make it easier to work on you must rotate it back to its original orientation before saving or you plane will look very strange when you load it. The textures are mapped separately from the image so FS doesn't know which end of the .bmp is up, just "where the wings SHOULD BE!"

2. All those cool little details (ie rivets, individual fuselage panels, vents, etc) are all part of the paint job so if you wipe them out they will be gone. Personally I don't worry about that so much but for those highly detail oriented individuals this can become a major point of frustration.

3. MAKE COPYS!! This might seem obvious but if you screw up the original texture then you have nothing to fall back to.

4. The way some textures are mapped it can be difficult to figure out exactly what part of the plane the texture will be covering. In photoshop you have no way of previewing the texture on the aircraft. This can be problematic when adding text or images/logos to your repaint.

I was using photoshop before I got FS Repaint and its more than capable of doing the job, but the ability to see the changes as you make them is invaluable. You may seriously want to consider FS Repaint as an addition to your toolbox.

What exactly are you asking? It really helps us to know how best to help you if your question tells us what you would like to know. From the above, I can only guess that you do not even really know how to use Photoshop because if you did, then you would be able to follow a Paintshop tutorial fine by using the principles.

So, my suggestion is first learn to use the tool. Get a book, or do the tutorials that come with Photoshop. Maybe even break down and read the manual a bit.

My next guess is that you were trying to ask, "Are there repainting tutorials which use Photoshop?" The answer is yes, but you have to find them using Google, or look on various flight sim websites in the tutorial sections. Most cannot afford Photoshop and so use PSP, but if you understand and use Photoshop (a more professional product) then you can easily translate any other tutorial.

In any case, if you are not willing to spend some time learning to use such a sophisticated tool, then you would be better off with the cheaper PSP.

And watch out for the alpha channels... the current bane to my existence!

Don't smoke pot kids... it will affect your mind when you are older LOL!
