• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.

    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

FSXA New to terrain creation?

I'm working on a custom scenery for FSX. In terms of adding buildings, ground polys, textures and whatnot, I have a fairly good idea of what I'm doing, and I'd like to go the extra mile and add custom mesh to it. However, I don't know how to go about doing this. I've downloaded terrain data from USGS, but I can't edit, or even view the .tif file that came with it in my photo editor/3D program, and I can't get a single friggin GIS program (I've tried FW Tools and several others) to export it, though it will open it and I can view the terrain data. I've been pulling my hair out for two days over this, but I just cannot for the life of me figure out exactly what programs I need and what steps I need to take to turn a geotiff into terrain mesh for FSX. Any help?

It's called Resample.exe and it's a part of the FSX SDKs. There's a nice bit of the SDK Help document that goes over this, appropriately called Terrain and Scenery.
 
I tried that. Upon running resample.exe with the raw data and inf file, it said it couldn't open the .tif and did not produce a bgl.
 
Hi,

It could be the geotiff is not in the right projection. There is an article on the wiki here that explains how to use the gdal tools to reproject it. Then it should work in resample.
 
I use Global Mapper to handle the GeoTiffs imported from USGS and for ReProjecting. Be sure image is reprojected to WGS84. Global Mapper does cost however.
It also handles all the DEM data, so you can export into 3ds Max for complete editing and manipulation of the 3dmesh.
