• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX "No Base Specular" not recognised

Arno,

After importing my .mdl file into latest dev release of MCX, the material setting for "No Base Specular" shows "False" when I have it set to true before saving out to a .X file. I compile that using the P3D SDK XtoMDL tool then import into MCX. This seems to be the only setting that isn't carried over. Any ideas?

** I want to thank you for the material settings template save feature. MCX continues to amaze.

Hi,

I'll see if I can reproduce this.

Getting mixed results now and I think I have the reason why. The materials that don't get the "No Base Specular" setting have a Spec map in the specular texture slot. Materials with only a diffuse texture carry the setting over.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

That would make sense. The no base specular setting has no effect when a specular map is assigned anyway. So maybe that's why xtomdl ignores the setting.

:o Thanks Arno, sry for wasting your time on this one. I suppose I knew this all along but with so many different tests and settings I haven't kept very good track of what is doing what. I thought that the no base specular setting controlled the use of the base material specular color? I suppose that it does in the case of no specular texture being present...

Always learning.

Hi,

Yes, the setting controls if the specular color is used. But if a specular map is applied than the specular color has no effect anymore. Then the specular color of each pixel is used instead.

But no problem posting this question. I didn't know that xtomdl would alter settings in that case. That is good to learn.

Hi,

I just checked and the FSX XtoMDL has the same behaviour as the Prepar3D one. So it seems by design that the "no base specular" setting is ignored if there is a specular map. As discussed above it kind of makes sense as well.
