• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Hi all

I bought FSDS 3.5 a few days ago and when I try complete the watertower tutorial, this is what I get when I try and save the file as a .bgl

I have include a screenshot of my preferences as well.

I am not sure what is going on, as I am really new to FSDS. I have FSX SDK SP1A installed

Thanks for any help

In your other post you mentioned that you were going to install MSXML but you said you thought it was already installed?

Make a save point so you can back up if you need to.

Then I would let it do a repair incase it is not installed correctly.

Also make sure you have .net Framework V2

And directX 9.0c …I am sure Win 7 would have this but it would be worth checking.

Next I guess I would reinstall the SDX stuff incase this did not install correctly.

Which version of FSX are you running standard, deluxe or acceleration?

Also try compiling a simple cube instead of the water tower.

I have FSX Deluxe installed as well as FSX Acceleration.

I recently uninstalled the SDK and then reinstalled it according to the FS Developer wiki. I installed the SDK from the Deluxe cd, then the SP1A off the Accel dvd, then the SDK off the Accel DVD

I will check if I have .net 2.0 installed, I assume that Win7 would have it as part of the install?

Thanks

Well, I have .net 2.0 already installed. I tried creating a cube, using the primitive along the left hand side of the editor. It still failed to create the .bgl file.

Just for fun, I loaded a tutorial airplane and selected Create .mdl and it compiled no problem, so I don't think there is a problem with the "." decimal setting, as if were wrong, .mdl would fail to compile as well?

thanks

Try making a simple cube and compiling as a scenery MDL.

Could you go too this folder and post a screen shot of the contents.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK\SDK\Environment Kit\BGL Compiler SDK

Hi Coldlake

The contents of that folder look ok.

Did you try making a scenery MDL file?

Farfy:D

I loaded in the watertowe project and created a scenery .mdl file. I got a message regarding an error log, but the file itself created successfully.

Does the .mdl file have to be converted to a .bgl in order for it to show up in FSX? I ask because I recall that the watertower tutorial stated that the watertower would appear in the Seattle airport scenery, but I haven't seen it, not even part of it.

Thanks

BGL files can be installed directly, if the compiler is working this is the fastest and easiest way to view your object. I work this way for all my work while I am building then when it is done I make a MDL file which you would install with another program such as Airport Design Editor

Well, I certainly am not going to buy another program just to make the mdl file usable in FSX.

I still have my .bgl compile problems, so I don't seem to be any further ahead than I was before?

If I have my Decimal system set to "." and the SDK Bgl directory seems to be intact, then what is causing these "failed to compile .bgl" errors?

I am seriously getting pissed off with Abacus for not responding to my tech support messages and for not somehow fixing this issue.

Well, I certainly am not going to buy another program just to make the mdl file usable in FSX.

I was not telling you that you need to buy another program…ADE is free.

After you get FSDS installed properly or at least get all the paths set correctly you will most likely end up making MDL files and you will use a program like ADE to make the scenery as FSDS is better suited for making the objects you put into the scenery.

I still have my .bgl compile problems, so I don't seem to be any further ahead than I was before?

The only reason I wanted you to try compiling your object as a MDL is so we can pin down which part of this is working and which part is not to get a better Idea as to which part to look at.

There is a slight chance that a file has been damage while been downloaded or installed but I have seen this here on the forums so many time that is just a bad path, getting pissed off is an option but it wont get this working for you, but it will make people uninterested in helping.

Ok back to work is this the err you see when trying to compile as a MDL.

XtoMDL_err_log.jpg

If so this is not really an err it is just the out put after a good compile.

I apologize, I didn't realize ADE was a free program.

I don't get any error log file created. The error log window just remains there, with no output visible.

To clarify, if I want to make objects to put in scenery using FSDS, do I have to save them as an mdl and then use ADE to add them to FSX?

Where is the error log saved after it is generated?

Actually, for FSX all you can compile is a .mdl file.

You would still need to create an .xml placement file and then use bglcomp.exe to generate a scenery .bgl file, or use something such as ADE9X to place the .mdl file

If it is a bad path, how do I fix it? What makes the path incorrect?

Hi Bill… FSDS can make a scenery BGL ( I work this way all the time) But for some reason this is not working for Coldlake. This is what we are trying to get fixed.
Either the path to his BGL compiler is wrong or the compiler is bad?? Or….??

He is new to this…. lets not get him more confused …LOL

This is what we need to try and sort out.

FSDS can make object two ways
-One directly as a BGL which is not working for you.

-Two as a MDL which as Bill said you need to make a placement file or as I do it just use ADE to place the object and then ADE make a BGL file to be installed into FSX

What FSDS can do wasn't my point.

The FSX XtoMDL.exe program only compiles .mdl files. I assume that Louis has a batch routine that he calls that will generate an .xml file and invoke the bglcomp.exe compiler silently.

As you've suggested, the path to bglcomp.exe is probably incorrect.

I don't understand how the path can be incorrect? I followed the directions for setting up FSDS in the help file and the other two paths are correct.

Can someone provide and example of what the correct path should look like?
