• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Objects not showing

Hi.

I'm new to the scenery design. I trying to use FSDS 3.5.1. When I make the object as in the building lesson. It shows up at KSEA as in the lesson. But when I make the object into a bgl to place it. It doesn't show up. I've tried placing it with ADE. It shows up in objects library and has a square simple terminal. But its not showing up in FSX. I do get a crashtree message but Abacus Said this is normal. I sent an email to Abacus but they take awhile to get back to you. I was hoping I could find the answer here.

Thank you
John

Hi John

By default the cords are set to KSEA so if you make a BGL file it will be there, if you wish to make your test object as a BGL (I think is the best way until you are done your object after you are done building then make an MDL file.) If you want your object to show up in a different location you need to change the cords in the “Project Properties” box.

I like to slew to the location you would like to build something and then save the flight giving it a name like my new location for this building…or what ever you get the idea.

Then in the “Project Properties” click on “Import from Saved Flight” you need to navigate to the saved flight (default location should be something like this)

C:\Users\Scott\Documents\Flight Simulator Files

Click on the saved flight and this will set the location for you.

Then just make your new object as a BGL file install this BGL into a active scenery folder making sure that any texture you make for this object are in the correct texture folder and restart the game you should see you object.

Once your object is completed then I would suggest you make a MDL file and install it into your scenery project with ADE.

Thank you Farfy

I'm confused. Using ADE do use the MDL file and add it to the Object Manager.
And if so where do you put this file. I can place the object in ADE? I understand about the texture file but what file goes where. FS9 you used to one big bgl file in the scenery folder and also your texture folder inside your Main airport file. With FSX is it still the same file system. Where do you store the MDL file? Do you need different BGL files for every object? I look at some of the 3 party scenery I've bought. I have KBOS every different object in there scenery folder is a BGL file term1 bgl term 2 bgl and so on. Where are the MDL files. And how do you make multible objects in a BGL file. Do you really need to use GMAX? I'm just learning FSDS. Can it do what GMAX can? Sorry I'm so long winded but this is confusing. I'm a little dense I guess. Looking at this forum looks like your the man to talk to.

Thank You for your HELP
John

Hi John ..so many questions LOL

Let me try to answer them as clearly as I can.
Using ADE do use the MDL file and add it to the Object Manager

ADE can install MDL files into your scenery, you can open a default airport OR make a new one .

To add MDL file to ADE you simple make a folder.
This can be anywhere it dose NOT need to be included with your scenery just so long as you know where it is.
I have a folder called “Airplane stuff” and in there I have folder called “MY MDL files”

Open ADE and then open the airport you are working on.
-click “LIST”
-then click Model.
-then add and navigate to the MDL you want.
-close this window.-to add to project right click on working screen and select ADD
-then Model and select the model you want and click ADD

There is a very good forum here for ADE
http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=95

If you use ADE it makes three ( I think) BGL files and all of your MDL files will be in there.

Installing scenery in FSX is similar to FS9. I think there are a few ways I personal do not install anything directly into FSX I like to keep all my scenery in separate folders and on a different hard drives to help keep FSX running smooth.

-In my “Airplane stuff”
-I have a folder called “Installed Scenery”.
-In this folder I have folders for each of my scenery. (mine and downloaded).
-In each of these folders is a scenery folder and a texture folder.
-All BGL files go into the scenery folder and any textures that that scenery uses go into the texture folder.

-let me assume you just made a folder called “JOHNS_TEST_AIRPORT”
(this can be anywhere on your PC )

in this folder you have a scenery folder and a texture folder.
-click on the

-To activate this just start the FSX.
-Open the scenery Library.
-Click Add Area.
-Navigate to “JOHNS_TEST_AIRPORT”
-click on it and then click “OK
-you should now see the scenery folder and the texture folder.
-All you need to do is click on the white part of this window do NOT click on ether of the two folders

OOPS I forget that there are other operating systems, that was for windows 7 .
For XP, If memory serves me correct you just navigate to the folder you want to install then click OK a few times.

And how do you make multible objects in a BGL file

FSDS can do this BUT ADE would be a better way to go.

Can it do what GMAX can?

I do not use Gmax but there are similar.
…..Easy boys I know them are fighting words LOL:D:D:D

Thank You so much Farfy.

Thank you for making everything clear. I'll give it all a try. Just one more question. What is the best size texture to use 256x256 higher, lower?
I use photoshop is there a forum on this. I'm not clear on the alpha channel thing. I use photoshop for my photos and simple bmps.

Thanks Again
John

Hi John

I use mostly 512X512 but 256 work well if its not to detailed.
I am not sure if there is a forum here but a goggle search will Likely find one.
Alpha channels are mostly used for glass.

I use Martin Wright’s “DXTBmp” tool to add alpha channels.

Photoshop can create an Alpha channel quite easily...

Click on the Channels tab and then use the icon at the bottom to "Add an Alpha channel..."

Thank you

I'm sure I'll have more questions down the road. Great forum I have a lot of reading to do.

Thanks
John
