Hi All,

Wonder if somebody could please help me....

I want to create some oil stanes textures for my apron, using a alpha channel, but don't really know were to begin...

Could somebody please point me in the right direction?

Many thanks

Hi,

Can you explain in a little more detail where you are stuck? Is it in the process of creating the texture in your image manipulation tool or somewhere else?

Thanks for the reply, what i want to try and make is a oil stain texture or a runway skid mark texture like the one pictured below along the touchdown zone. I know a alpha channel is used, i have Adobe Photoshop. I can create most things but this is something i find hard to create: But yes, it is creating it in the manipulation tool.

Any help would be post appreciated.

Thanks

Arno,

I am aware on how to create the alpha, but not sure how to go about using it to make the runway skid marks. That seems to be the bit i am tripping up on.

Thanks anyway.

Simply said just make the areas around the marks transparent, so that you can lay them on your runway or aprons.

Not trying to sound sarcastic. But couldn't you just use actual photos and then remove any artifacts not related? Or use photoshop to create it from scratch (way more work). Then go on to the making/cleaning the alpha channel afterward. Which, when cleaned up is the "oil stain" only. Which allows placement almost anywhere without it looking out of place.

I think...

Ahhh,

So what your saying is in say Google get the image of the stain i want, edit it, create the alpha and place?

That isn't a bad idea actually..... i may try that, But how would i go about creating it from scratch?
Thanks

Hi,

Have managed to create a good looking smudge, BUT, when i format the 32bit with Alpha to a DXT3 with Mimmaps it seems to develop rings around it like my image at another airport:

I have converted it correctly saving it as a 32bit in Photoshop then opening with either DXTBMP or Imagetool adding the mipmaps and formating to a DXT3. Were am i going wrong? In most cases the alpha doesn't show and when formating to a DXT1 the texture looks like this:

And with the runway marks like this:

This has never happeded before.... I can't see what the problem is, all my FS settings are maxed out so that isn't the problem..

Any advice please?

Many thanks
