• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

P3D sceneries

Hello.

I use P3D and I fly 99% of the time in Brazil. As expected, a lot of P3D sceneries are outdated by now. Terminal layout changes don’t bother me, but a lot of airports had their runways extended. I have tried creating some scasm runways and place it over the old ones, but most of the time the original runway still bleeds through.

I’d like to know if someone who’d be interested in in taking on some comissioned projects could help me with that. Once again, I’m not interested in modeling terminal buildings, but mainly creating some new runways to place it over old ones. This is for personal use only with freeware sceneries to be clear.

Thanks

Eduardo

Which P3D version? Many people can do things like extend runways using ADE, especially with v4 and v5.

It’s V4. The problem is that the sceneries have customized runways , so ADE runways don’t show up. That’s why I need to “create” a new runway to place on top of the original one.

You cannot place an ADE runway on top of a runway made from a ground polygon, sorry. FS will always place the ground polygon on top. The only way I can think of to put another runway on top of that would be to create your own ground polygon runway with a higher display level than the existing one.

Thanks for the answer !

That’s exactly what I’m looking for, but I have very limited knowledge on how to create the runway as a ground poly. I’ve read the tutorials but no luck.

You can create transparent runways and taxiways etc in ADE if you want a photo-real airfield. You can then create a new ground polygon using SBuilderX or similar, which can replace the one that comes with the freeware scenery. This will sit underneath the ADE-created airfield if you want to use the default surface textures for the hard surfaces. Having created the new base airfield, you can import the objects from the freeware scenery so that they appear as they did in the original scenery.

Thanks for the answer Tim.

If I wanted to use everything but the original runway that comes with the free scenery, would it be possible to just create a new runway as a ground poly and place it on top of the original one ?

Yes, probably - but that's not a workflow I've ever done. It should be easy enough to do a trial in ADE with some of the basic textures included. If it works, than you could source and use better textures to get a realistic-looking runway. If you've got a link to one of the free sceneries you're referencing, I can have a look and see what might be the best method of bringing it up to date.

Understood Tim !

Thanks for your answer once again !

I did a load of stuff in Brazil for MAIW a couple of years ago, including some 'quick and dirty' updates of some of the stock P3D civil airfields using exactly this technique - a couple of screenshots below.
