• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX PAR or ASR Radar Approach?

I was trying to think of a fun mission to get started with for fun. Anyone interested in a PAR or ASR approach with controller instructions? Maybe I missed it, but it doesn't look like anyone has done this yet. I have a working mission where the path angle to runway at 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 degrees is called out so I thinking it wouldn't be too bad. Of course the fun part would be to force the weather to minimums and make sure there wasn't any other approach available to "cheat". Thoughts anyone?

Hi,
I am not sure whether you are talking about an add on to be developed or the use of the existing functionality of the simulator.
I have a complete GCA approach running as add on via SimConnect . It works with voice recognition and text to speech output. When you check in on a specific frequency with an initial call you will be identified by a search controller. Right in time you will be transferred to the final controller and you get a talk down to the RPI. All this can be used in your preferred weather conditions. So if you have a specific question for a development, I could probably help.

Thanks Mike - Your add-on sounds like just about exactly what I was thinking of trying out but probably doing it the hard way since I am not a programmer by trade. I was thinking of trying to make the radio calls as realistic as possible including the silly "landing checks" call that sometimes makes the Air Force pilots laugh. How would I be able to try your add-on?

Thanks,
Brad

Hi Brad,
that is complicated, the software was made for a T1 simulator (used for pilot training in the US Navy). It works together with FSX but you need a DIS interface connected to SimConnect. We had a demo session in Pensacola just one year ago and made simulated GCA approaches into Columbus. It worked fine. The whole project is a bunch of programs containing a PAR, an ASR , a radio box, the GCA AI controller program and the DIS interface to SimConnect. I think I need another year until I can give it to the community. For the moment I work on a AI tower controller and will add approach and enroute control soon. If someone wants to develop a similar program I would share my experiences.
Regards
Mike

Thanks Mike. Well, if it was for mil pilot training I'm sure you got all the radio call nicely crafted :) I am starting to understand about the "complicated" aspect of all this. I've just been experimenting a bit to see how much work it takes to create some fun missions. Nothing seems easy but I guess that drives up the satisfaction when you actually get something working. Perhaps I should wait for the new MS Flight to invest any of my time? Cheers.
