• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

photoscenery/model feasibility?

because ms2020 doesn't do large scale photoscenery replacement very well, and terrain mesh not at all, I was wondering if a very large model that I could drop on the scene to replace an entire area (10s of square km) would work.

I'm asking because i don't yet have experience making models for fs2020, and dont want to waste my time learning if it really isnt deemed feasible by experienced modelers here on the forum.

I think there are some advantages to using a model vs terrain mesh that make it a viable solution as we can get much much higher detail levels for areas with very little real elevation data.

check the pictures for an example.

Hello:

High detail scenery content needs to be in "chunks" with LODs and MIPMAPs in order to render efficiently at run time in FS.

AFAIK, the FSX and MSFS-2020 terrain quad grid tile system both are structured in that way, although we may not yet have the methods documented in the latest MFS-2020 SDK version.

However, multiple adjacent 3D scenery models of detailed terrain that covers tens of Kilometers would likely prove too much of a burden on the FS run time rendering engine.

But smaller extents of less detailed 3D models are routinely used to make G-Polys at large airports.

I anticipate we shall see the MSFS-2020 SDK enable imagery and terrain mesh soon, and I'd recommend waiting until then to make textured high detail ground surfaces. ;)
