• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

plane flies backwards!

First time horsing around with making a plane. Turned out ok, too many polys, however, Haven[t learned how to texture the darned thing. Biggest problem.... it flies backwards! bwahahaha! What did I do or not do? Bob

Let me guess.

You did the gmax P-38 tutorial, and managed to export it into the sim.

The views are shown "backward". Before exporting the model, you need to select all parts, rotate 180 degrees around the vertical.

Felix- Good to talk to ya again. I did it in FSDS, but probably the same kind of problem?

FSDS has that Pinewood tutorial. I don't remember having to rotate anything in that tutorial, but maybe in that tutorial it is done for you.

Rotate each part? I.e. make left wing the ring wing etc? Bob

No, select all parts (at the same time) and rotate the entire model 180 degrees in 'z'.

ARGGGG! :) I choose all parts so they are all hilited in fsds 3. I go to transform- rotate- 180° on Z, but is it entire part, vertices only or axis? Or am I out in left field again?

When starting aircaft mdl I see auto adjust patrs. Should that be checked? I choose new ac. What else has to be checked? Questions questioins. Bob Just wait til I try to make a flyable ac in fsds v3.5.1! I hear that can be a pain in the you-know-what compared to making a building or whatever. I"m just fiddling with this to know how. I'll leave the serious stuff to you guys! hahaha

Select all parts (all yellow) Click on rotate button and then click on X and Y buttons to lock them and only allow rotation about Z. Now rotate, by clicking on window, hold mouse button down and move mouse sideways until the model has turned through 180 degrees. Release mouse button and press rotate button to lock the model in place. Release the select all.

You are rotating 'full and complete' parts, not their axis' or vertices, but the entire parts.

:D

Good explanation Graham.

We all have to learn from point zero. Some of us ask more questions then others. I am the record breaker for mast questions asked. (Also the Gmax poster child for the gifted ability to reset Gmax stock settings and messing up Gmax). (or at least I used to be, knock on wood. ).

I must admit, things are boring....

gmax is such a powerful program, with so many ways to do something, that I remember days when even as you're turning out really neat models, you were asking how to do stuff that even *I* could do in gmax! (Of course, I won't bring up that nasty "blue checker" episode in the material manager)

lol... For a week, I worked every day on learning textures to get the textures to show up on the model! ONE FULL WEEK!!!!!

I threw models at the wall, I punched a hole in the wall, slammed doors, cried, yelled, almost lost the computer... All over a simple blue and white checkered button....

That was a trial of trials. Also a lesson to learn, that you can be 'right at the very edge of success' and not even realise it. Once I had that button clicked, the model was almost done, including learning to do models in Gmax. That close.. and I almost walked away from Gmax that one last day, when Bill Leaming says.... 'did you click that little blue and white button?'

Thank you Lord for getting me through that. Thanks Bill Leaming for the humble advice and guidence. You to Felix. Goodness.. You brought back a nightmare, lol....

Thanks to you guys I feel I'm not so out in the cold. Much to learn! I had donwloaded a Constellation and used the bmps as backdrop.(FSDS) So far the model looked fairly decent. Suddenly realised the props have 3 blades each, not four. Made my own props. Just for fun, animated them with prop_still, etc.

Holy cow! The downloaded Connie has about 900+ polys. Mine?.... Are you sitting down? over 3700! And that's with trying to be frugal with the sections when using tubes! At least the cotton-pickin thing flies forward now. I think I'll just stick to making it static for now. And applying textures to the fuselage is a wholw 'nother ball game! Tried doing poly mode, choosing a few polys and joining the apply bmps to that. Seems to work but looks awful so far.

Also trying to learn how to do cars. I use stacked boxes then join, snap to scale, and point mode to shape them. Again textures can be tricky. There should be a tutorial somewhee to make cars, planes.... and won't even dre to ask how to make people. Rwy12 had a few rudimentary people. Some folk out there made some nice ones but warned the ploys were high. I made a few golfers on a thin box and alpha'd that turned out well.

Anyway, thanx all for your patience. I"ll keep poking along and trying this and that. Bob

There were some great Cars groups at the Gmax forums, which later were moved to Turbo Squid.com I learned alot from the car guys. They made beautiful cars from extruding out Edges, working them slowly around a corner, up over a hood, along the side of a fender, car door, etc. Some painstaking work, but the results were awesome. They would start with a basic flat sheet of Polygon with about 4 lines through it and start from there, say the car door panel, and slowly work their way out. Have to have good 3-views for it. Actually, once you learn to work in just splines (edges of a Mesh object) you can really crank through a model and get a shape more exact and faster then you could ever imagine.

I agree. Not enough tutorials. Maybe a search through the Gmax forums at TurboSquid on car tutorials, etc, might turn up a couple that I had seen years ago.

Studying some 'mesh view' screenshots of the cars you can buy at TurboSquid.com can enlighten you on alot of the techniques they use in corners and joining surfaces, etc.

I'll check that out even though I'm an FSDS guy. And, Happy Thanksgiving to all ya. If ever flying on line together I'll show ya all how to crash and burn on an ils approach. :) Bob

Just went to turbosquid. Maybe I went to the wrong place on the forums, but all I see is people asking for help to design their payware, or offers o fdone projects for "as little as" $800., $650, etc. Sheesh! Maybe I got the wrong spot. I'll try a search for tutorials, etc. Bob

I had the same problem too!

I had this same plane flying backwards problem too. I ended up using an option in makemdl to turn it around.

As a side question though I am having another problem!

I don't see any textures on my model as lionheart described that he fixed by clicking on a checkbox.... what checkbox would that happen to be? :)

hey Mlacay,

Its a blue and white checkered 'button' thing right of the Diffuse swatch on the Material Manager. Cant miss it. Once you have the depressed, your textures are visible. Its good to turn it of for working on mesh objects to see how smooth they are (in plain gray), but back on with that checkered button turned on (depressed).
