• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.

    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Polygons missing

Hi all,

i know there is a similar topic in this forum. But I dont think its the same problem.
Having the issue that not all polygons from an object are beeing shown in ModelConverterX. I double checked all polygons facing the same direction and all vertices are on the same level.

Attached mdl and some screens so that you may can confirm the problem or might have a solution.

Exports are beeing done with prepar3d to X and than compiled with fsx xtomdl.

Hi,

When I load the MDL, it seems that the missing polygons are facing down. If you rotate you will see them.

I would expect that this is a problem with the MDL, when loaded in FS you will get the same result I think.

just run a few tests to make sure the polygons are all facing upward.

Speaking in terms of 3dmax:
- selected single polygon (one that was not visible before) and flipped it -> polygon still not visible in mcx
- flipped it back and reviewd the normals of all vertices -> pointing upward
- applied "Normal" modifier and junified normals -> polys still missing in mcx
- flipped all polygons -> all polygons visible before whre visible from the downside but not the upside. polygons missed before still missing.

The polygons missing have nothing special. Some created by placing vertices and drawing polygon by hand, others generated by copying an edge. But i did those operations on the non missing polygons too.

Dont know what to test next. Its a bit of mystery to me.

I don't have 3DS Max, so I can't help with testing that file.

I did have another look at the MDL and the polygon missing indeed has normals pointing down not up.

Did you test the object in FS already? That would help to see if it is a problem of the tool or of the MDL file.
 
Hi Arno,

just tested the following:

- Export as X
- XtoMdl
- Open in mcx -> polygons missing
- Converted as ground polygon
- Run in FSX -> polygons visible

Seems the problem is mcx. Everything just looked good from within fsx.
 
Did you ever use the Mirror button on these polygons? If so they will appear fine in GMAX (and I assume Max), but will be flipped in MCX and in FS. Perhaps the ground poly conversion routine flips them back again?

I had another look at the file. In the MDL file being imported the polygons are indeed facing down.

But the ground polygon wizard does fix that in one specific condition. It is the logic that slices it in 100 meter segments that will make sure all ground polygons are facing up. But the polygons only get through that logic when you do not filter non-ground polygons on importing the file.
 
- Update-

Just seems this is neither the problem of the mdl nor the model converter (in this specific case). Just gave the mdl to a friend and it showed up fine in mcx. I asume the problem lies within the graphic card driver of the laptop I use as developing machine (128MB onboard Intel).
Did not checked it on my game rig yet.
