• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Is it just me or is learning this program an even bigger pain than Max? It's simple enough to understand, but every time I try to move a part it never goes where I want it to!

It can be trying.

Learning to know how to move things is key. For instance, if you are in say Twist mode, you dont want to move the mouse 'diagonally', only either left to right, or up and down. I tend to want to move diagonally and that usually makes it go out of axis.

If it had 2 views or 'locks' in the axis movements, then I think it would be easier.

Funny how Gmax in one screen works fine, but in Poser, it doesnt. They should have X, Y, Z coordinate axis movements, instead of XY, XZ, ZY, etc..

Autodesk should buy them out and incorporate this into Max and Maya. If it had Max's Gizmo it would be much easier to use. Right now I've gotten the basic pose down; I just need to figure out what to do with it and how to animate it. Do I use Max rigging, etc...

NOOOOO!!!!! lololol...

eeeks..

clean your mouth with soap for having said that....!

If autodesk (cough) bought them out, then it would go up 4X in cost ($2,000.00 instead of $500), and then have a lifetime one person only ownership, no selling the original disks, only last one year and need a subscription, and you could only have it on 3 computers all its life span...

nooooooooooooooo..... eeeks.. Thats like, crazy!

Poser just needs to rework their tools, thats all. Perhaps we can all write in and ask them if its possible they could include new tools in the next edition which I am sure they are creating.

eeks.. .

So just to be absolutely clear on this, to keep from maybe misunderstanding you; then you would be against Autodesk buying out Poser? :D

So I'm sorry if this sounds a little dense, but could someone here just give me a brief overview of how to cloth my pilot like I want? I'll figure out the specifics, but a brief outline would really help here...

Hey Kevin,

You add a jacket, for instance, to the figure, then above, click Figure/Conform To, and attach it to the main body figure. If you do not 'conform' the new pieces of clothing, they will not attach to body parts such as the arms and things.

Also, if 'body parts' come through the clothing, you can delete the body polygons later via select by Element in Gmax and select all hidden polygons and delete them. You can also detach Elements into seperate parts (arms, neck, head, etc) and then map them and attach materials.

When you export, you might export as one piece, not exporting as seperate sections and parts. This way, usually, hidden polys (skin under clothing) will not be in the export (sometimes).

I've been exporting just a figure from Poser and trying to dress it and rig it in Max, as you can guess, without much success. I'm reading up on Poser now but it's taking way too much time for me...

Thats odd. It works fairly good for me. I have Poser 5 and work in Gmax and it did well. Learning to first work in adding clothes was difficult and then someone at the Poser forums told me about how to 'Conform to' and it was all smooth running from there.

You can adjust the items onto the body also, if you are having issues there. You click on the 'body' (object like shirt) that you want to adjust, and go to the menu for it and adjust the X, Y, Z coordinates, make them wider, narrower, etc. I have had to do that and they adjust fair, not perfect but fair. I delete the skin that sticks out later. I export in 3DS format.

So Bill, do you use Poser figures - after somehow translating them - for FSX? I have been looking to do that for a long time.

Hey Francois,

Yes. They are ideal for FS work.

There are some nicely done figures and heads in TurboSquid.com where you can purchase readily mapped people, but you need to bend them and that can ruin the mapping. You really only need to have the hands and head though and export a very simple body of clothing, all in the correct, relaxed flight pose.

Please note that the latest 'in' Poser models are 'extremely high' in polygon counts, having parts such as the entire eye mechanisms like pupils, lenses, corneas. They have all their teeth, a tongue, strands of hair. Poser offers many levels of models, from number 4 up to 7. 5 is when they got massively high detail. 4 'basic' was super plain, too simple. 4 high is getting into FS9 realm, and 5 with Gmax 'Optomize' at about level 7 to 9+ will simplify the head structure enough. You can use the 4-High hair and get a nice shape that with textures will make it look pretty realistic.

You can find accessories out there for these as well, such as sun glasses and things. Michael from SOH was saying that there are teams of people that cater to making clothing and things for devs and studios. I have yet to find one. I would like to have some leather flight coats and things made.

I think an artist in 3D people mesh could make good money just making pilots for this industry. Some of these commercial artists work in very quick speed and high quality. Finding them though is the really hard part....

Wow, great information Bill, thanks ! I bought Poser 6 at the time and am now at PoserPro (9?). Been playing with it on and off, but didn't think they were usable for FSX. Will have another look at that this winter (US trip comes first now!).

As for clothing artists, I can help you there. I have been a member of Poserworld for many years..... http://www.poserworld.com/Home.aspx Check them out!

Thanks Francois,

Very much appreciated. I'll check that out.

What parts of America will you be going to?

Florida (cousin and Fantasy of Flight - business), Seattle (friends) - hop to Alaska, flying a Beaver into the Misty Fjords, Emma Field *cough*, flying a Taylorcraft, and San Francisco area, riding a BMW and flying some bi-plane there.

And seeing lots of friends along the way :-)

Man... You are quite the worldly traveller!

Have fun and be safe.

Take lots of photos for the Facebook albums. I seem to see the world through your photos.

To be honest.. this is a fine trip, but I am happy not having to do that too often anymore. Thinking of the years I spent 160 out of360 days abroad (and mostly either in airliners, meetings rooms or airport hotels) I am quite happy just riding the bike or driving the car on the occasional trip through Europe now.
Photos coming up.... camera is loaded with 36Gig of storage !

While you're in the Lakeland area, you should also check out the Florida Air Museum at Sun-N-Fun at the Lakeland Airport. It's more GA oriented and has some of the spillover from FoF. It's also like 1/5th the price...

Won't have time for that probably. We have a photo shoot arranged at FoF and will be busy most of the day :-)

Next time ! :-)
