• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Problem figuring the stick action...

Ok, so I am trying to model the stick correctly for the Mystery Ship and am having a bit of trouble understanding these blueprints. I was hoping one of you might be able to take a look at it and give some advice. The Elevator controls are obvious, but I can't understand how they get the side to side motion for the Ailerons... These are from original plans drawn up by Herb Rawdon (the original designer) back in the 70's and are in PDF format...

incomplete

this is not the complete set of drawings.....ie only one control surface could be manufactured from this set.....

you could make an educated guess...but you would be designing your own
solutions.....where are the rest of the drawings?....and they dont carry much in the way of actual standard manufacturing data...

choices....find the rest of drawings,if not.examine actual aircraft...if not. make an educated guess for your own design solution, based on similar types...

sorry for the lack of help.i could build some of this full size, but not all of the missing...jim..ps the rudder cables that connect to the fulcrum, that connects to the stick is crucial..there would be similar for each aerleron....leverage gearing and all that...jim

interesting

these are sub assembly drawings....but the braking, rudder system has enough
information....there would be final assembly drawings...

somebody would build a component from a drawing without having to know
how the collection of components fitted together...

interesting braking arrangement....ime assuming you need to show the mechanism in the interior cockpit view, as it would be visible....

but from my brief look...the elevator fulcrum would be under or aft of the seat

the detail of the in wing aerleron mechanism would be hidden....that leaves stick...rudder pedals...brake pedals...and the aerleron mechanism which looks like 20degrees left right .....i will have to enlarge and print out...need to look more closely....i could build all the sub assemblys..ime very fond of those end of shaft gimbal bearings......could build quite a bit of this in gmax as sub assemblys to scale if there are enough dimensions...jim had onother quick look...not much time tonight, have to be awake real early........the stick operates in the same way as my joystick...ch fighterstick...one of the few that doesnt use the lousy design solution of a sliding cup and cone.....it uses a rotating barrelfor elevator with a left right sliding shaft for aerleron inside the barrell.allowing them to operate independantly. much like your a/c stick.....jim

ime sure you have figured this out by now........the first drawing, bot left, shows the joystick and elevator actuator....from the left side..z axis...the gizmo in between is a view from behind the stick along the x axis....the aerleron actuator...which has a shaft each side, similar to the elevator shaft..and these shafts would connect to actuators, offset pivot type, one shaft operating two cables, into wing guide tubes....all controlled by a 2 axis bearing,or something similar, internal to the stick pivot...not drawn clearly enough, but similar in principal at least to my ch fighterstick...

the stop limitars are simple devices..and the rudder and brake system are simple fabrications...drawn one side only ,they are handed,ie mirror images..

the cable runs for the rudder, including the guide pulleys are shown..can you see all this from the pilots seat?...i wouldnt want get my feet tangled up in that lot...not that i would, as it would already be clogged up with cheese sandwiches, and whisky bottles....jim

As a side project, I have been building the wing in Max to get a feeling for it. I have it most of the way done, and it's been fairly simple. After that, I want to build an exact 3/4 scale wing with all the hardware and rigging and such then hang it in my living room as artwork.

perfect

some people like paintings, some like expensive rugs..but you cant beat an
engineering masterpiece..

i keep a 1957 triumph sports tiger cub in my hallway....better than a picasso anyday......jim

So as I understand it, we end up with something like this. This is just a quick and dirty model, but actually, all that is going to be seen is through a hole in the cockpit floor, so it really doesn't need to be THAT detailed.

If I'm reading this right, there is a separate rudder and brake pedal...

yes youve got it...obviously its a bit more sophisticated....gimbal bearings...
and a more complex stick main swivel...if you used bolts and rigid links, operating the aerlerons would affect the elevator due to angle changes...to
a certain extent.....at the end of the aerleron shafts would be some kind pivot
connecting one shaft to two cables...into the wing...the rudder pedals one each side with the cables running under a guide wheel each side...the brake pedals one each side ,inboard and back from the rudder pedals..which looks like rudder or brakes,,pilots choice,,scary...

good thing the anims do not have to mach to behavior of the control surfaces.
i bet this is going to be a blast to fly...jim
note..the drawing shows the aerleron pivot on the centre line of the stick...stops would limit over application..jim

Never mind what I just deleted. :) Just read my signature and that will explain it... How do they eliminate the vertical travel in the connecting rods?

your model looks correct.....for the elevator not an issue...but coupled with the aerlerons....left or right stick would cause slight up elevator, mitigated by
gimbal bearings on the shafts...the drawings dont show enough to see .the aerlerons on theyre own are not an issue with the shafts moving in a slight arc vertically,,,its the combined effect...but then my aicraft in real life exhibits a marked pitch up when using airbrakes...pilot controllable..jim

Looking through my books today, I found this. It sure would have come in handy a couple of weeks ago...

Anyone want to hazard a guess what the two electrical wires coming from the base of the stick are for?

Kevin
