• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Problem with 3DS Export

If I export a model as 3DS format, I find it cannot be imported to gmax: The error in gmax is "Improper file format". I also have problem trying to import the 3DS mesh to photoshop (photoshop stops responding and I have to kill the process).

I also get the following warning message if I import the 3DS file back to MCX:

6:36 AM M3DSReader Warning Unknown Chunk: ***UNKNOWN*** (0x0000A08A)

Using MCX dev release dated 12/6/2015

Thanks,
Barry

Originally I was trying 3ds to experiment with rendering in photoshop. Wavefront obj format works though

It appears this issue has already been reported here: http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/threads/3ds-format-not-working.435781/

I'm using Win7 Ultimate 64 bit. Ran windows update so I'm on latest but the problem remains. I'll try it on win10 when I get a chance.

Edit: The model is a fairly simple hangar I made in gmax. I'll upload it if that will help though from the other thread above it's not reproducible on Arno's computer.

Ok. I was just wondering since the 3ds format has never worked well for me in a file conversion without a lot of reconstruction so I abandoned it a long time ago.

Hi,

There was a bug reported before, but I thought that was for one specific model, not for any 3ds file. I'll check if I can reproduce it.

3ds is an antique format, so if another format also works that is often a better choice.

I have given up completely with using 3ds and SCASM in MDX, too much frustration! These old formats seem to confuse MDX, so I will now use only Wavefront obj, mdl and bgl.

Well I started this tool to be able to get from SCASM to MDL. So it should be capable of that :). But the format is more flexible (some SCASM macro's use really ugly code that's hard to interpret as MDL). Formats like the FSX MDL are much more well defined and thus easier to work with.

Thanks for the help, I didn't realize that 3DS was such an old format. Wavefront OBJ is working well for me.
