Problem with an FSX library object

I was wondering if someone could confirm if the terminal building walls at KSLC are missing at NIGHT. This is what happens on my computer and I just want to see if it is a problem with the texture or if it is just my computer. The walls show up just fine during the day, the invisible wall problem is just at night.

If it isn't just my computer but a problem with the texture, does anyone know a way to fix this?

Thanks!

-James

Hi James,

Are you talking about the default scenery here or some sort of addon?

Just to add more information and include some pictures. Picture 1 below is a screen shot taken from FSX default scenery at KSLC at night. Notice how the particular terminal walls are transparent while others are not.

The other six pictures are the actual textures of the terminal buildings, found in FSX folder/Scenery/NAMC/texture. The files were reformated from .dds into .bmp and then into .jpg so they could be uploaded. I am not sure if this will provide any clues as to why the walls are transparent, but I thought I would give it a shot. The names of each picture (except for my screen shot) corresponds with the same file name of the .dds texture.

Also, what is the "specular" version of each texture?

Any help would be appreciated and will allow my project to get finished quicker! :)

I can confirm that what you are seeing is a FSX default problem with KSLC.

I have exactly the same disappearing parts of the Terminals at night vs day time.

I have tried many different settings on 2 different computers and the walls are still missing at night.

The walls will also be missing if you load KSLC in the day time but will eventually fill in as the textures load. They appear to be the last part of the scenery to load.

I also tweaked both my ATI 9700 pro on one computer and my dual GTX 8800 SLI's on another computer put no change in getting the walls to show.

Because they are MS default night textures they will have to fix unless someone builds new building models and textures as a replacement.

That is beyound my level of knowledge.

Jim,

Again, thanks for your time and help! :)

I assumed there wasn't a quick fix for the problem. I am not very knowledgeable about textures (at least modifying them) and I thought perhaps there was a way to change the settings or something within the .dds file. It is odd that it only happens at night. If you load it at dusk for example, the texture is there but gradually becomes more transparent until it is night.

I will keep playing around with it.

Is itpossible the buildings just don't have night textures applied?

Either way - it is not (yet) possible to disassemble and edit a building to re-texture it. Possibly only ACES can fix this (in SP2:) )

I am assuming it has something to do with the model itself having the textures applied incorrectly. I hope ACES fixes it!

A Fix

I know this is really old, but I had a similar problem when trying to add a library object to an airport I'm editing (cabin log 3) with ADE, and I managed to figure out a way to fix this.

The problem is that the textures themselves are screwed up. If you look at the LM textures above (3rd and 6th images above) everything except the lighted area is black. The alpha is exactly the same. Thus the black becomes transparent. If you look at some of the other LM textures in the same folder (say KSLC_Hanger1_lm.dds) that's not how they are done.

What I did was to make a new night texture, overlaying the old LM texture (as a seperate layer) onto a copy of the regular texture with 75% opacity in GIMP. The translucent black area makes the regular texture underneath darker. The gate signs aren't as bright as they would be otherwise this way. For slightly better results, you could just make the large black area 75% opaque and leave the gate signs alone. But I was doing this as proof of concept. You also need to clear the alpha channel to white. (DXTBMP's "Create Alpha Channel (Green)" works easily since that color green isn't in the images.)

In any event, this works and this method should work with other objects that have the same issue. (Like cabin log 3.)

Since there was a similar thread on AVSIM I posted the fixed files there along with most of this same description. The thread is here for anyone who wants to check this out themselves:
http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showtopic=66903
Remember, this should work with anything else that has the same issue. (I think the alpha channel in the original LM bitmaps screwed things up by deleting most of the texture and making it black. DXTBMP seemed to do the same thing when trying to save the file before I changed the alpha.)

EdrickV

Thankyou for the followup here at FSDeveloper.

I did see the post on AVSIM with the fixed night alpha channel textures.

Hi Edrick:

I have recently discovered the same issue you have previously reported:

http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5854

You have addressed the apparent production errors by ACES involving night textures for:

[FSX install path]\Scenery\Global\buildings.bgl

ctrltowrbldg04

GUID {7656aefe-406e-4465-a0f4-27023699538f}

and other objects here:

http://www.fseforums.com/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=25101&start=126&posts=150

You have reportedly fixed the issue involving \Scenery\Global\Texture\ctrl_twr_b_LM.dds, and had posted the fix at AVSIM here: ;)

<-- AVSIM is offline presently! -->

http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showtopic=66903

As you may know, AVSIM deleted attachments after 7 days, and I missed your post at the time. :o

Would it be possible to re-post your fixes for this here at FSDeveloper as an attachment to benefit both me and other interested parties?

This apparently was not resolved in SP2/Acceleration, and I have a freeware night scenery for which I wanted to use a "somewhat visibly light-mapped" version of some objects in that default scenery library file.

Since <-- ACES is also offline presently! -->, we obviously will need to fix these things ourselves. :yikes:

I would greatly appreciate your kind consideration with this; thanks for any help you'd be willing to share with us here. :)

PS: Using the excellent freeware "XnView" to scan the [FSX install path]\Scenery\Global\Texture\folder, I saw 279 default texture files with the same odd 16x16 size in that folder, and only a few appeared to have any visible color in the "mini thumbnail" view; I wonder if they have display / mapping problems too?

FYI: This was also not fixed by the December 2008 GEX freeware release which so nicely edited / enhanced most default night textures in the [FSX install path]\Texture\folder. :banghead:

Wow, been a long time since I've been here. I'm going to attach a zip file to this post with all the textures I've fixed. List of the textures below.

Scenery\Global\Texture\USa_whiteHouseSingle_all_lm.dds
Scenery\Global\Texture\barracks1_t_lm.dds
Scenery\Global\Texture\brrks_a_lm.dds

Scenery\Global\Texture\ctrl_twr_e_LM.dds
Scenery\Global\Texture\md_lm.dds

Note that this includes 2 textures (cabin_log_*_LM.dds) that aren't blank but have slightly different issues. (The cabin's windows are visible at night, but that's all. The walls vanish.)

While I haven't looked over all these files, going by file size these images seem to have the same issue as most of the ones I've modified: (aka the 16x16 black texture)

Hi Edrick:

Thank you so much for following up on this thread; it's great to see more FS Community fixes helping fulfill more of the potential ACES set out to bring us with FSX. :D

I'll be taking a detailed look at these soon, as I am updating my project which would otherwise have been missing the night illumination described above.

If we find any other FSX textures amiss, perhaps we might put together a cooperative effort here at FSDeveloper to set them right ?

As to the "FSX Enhanced Autogen" freeware (day and night) texture packages released by the GEX team late last year, that (2)-part download is available here: ;)

With most of those textures I didn't really do much. I got the day texture into GIMP, added a black layer on top, and set the layer opacity to 75%. The result became the night texture. (One exception to this is where I had night textures that weren't just the 16x16 black square. Like the cabins I mentioned. Their night textures had the lit up windows but the rest was black. In this case the windows became a separate layer, on top of the black layer, so that they didn't get darkened along with the regular texture.

One object I recall having issues with was a bunch of static planes. They vanish at night and I was unable to figure out how to fix that. I think a couple textures in that zip file are from my attempt to fix that like I did other objects.

Hi Edrick:

Was it one of these objects, by any chance ?

Perhaps if we can identify the model(s), we can see what is going on with that object and its mapped textures. ;)

Have you by any chance tinkered with these interesting utilities by Martin Wright ?

http://www.btinternet.com/~mnwright/beta.htm

MDLMat

"Material editor for FS2002/FS2004/CFS2 MDL files.

Lets you edit all the colours and values of the materials including the Specularity value.

Very Beta. Always make a backup before editing a MDL.

Works with any MDL that uses materials (including GMAX and FSDS2 models)

23/06/05 - added single (selectable) property to the listing for quick overview"

MipEdit

"Program to let you display and edit the individual mip images contained in a DDS or Extended BMP texture"

http://www.btinternet.com/~mnwright/download/mipedit.exe

Hope these might help "shed some light" on missing objects too ! :)

PS: Just tested my scenery project with one of your building texture fixes... it looks great at night now ! :p

The problem object was air_staticplanes01 from the airport_objects.bgl file. Textures it uses are: C18201_LM.dds C18202.dds C18202_LM.dds C18203.dds C18203_LM.dds Cherokee01.dds Cherokee01_LM.dds Cherokee02.dds and Cherokee02_LM.dds.

Those tools wouldn't be any help, one is for editing untextured materials in FS9 and earlier MDL files, the other is for editing mipmaps, which these textures don't have. The problem is that with the default night textures (the 16x16 black square) the planes show up totally black at night. Trying to make night textures the same way I did for other objects made the planes vanish at night. This problem is shared with air_staticplanes02, air_staticplanes03, and air_staticplanes04. I figure out what textures a particular object uses by opening the relevant bgl file in a hex editor and searching for the object name as seen in ADE. The filename is there as part of the MDLX header and the texture filenames are a little ways below.
