• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum

Problem with mipmaps?

So....I've been converting scenery for Boston from Google Warehouse models. Started working on the State Street Financial building and had it all ready to go with mipmapped textures. Loaded up FS9 and it later crashes and says FS9 has run out of memory. Got rid of the mipmaps and just went for a straight texture and it works. My question is why and should I not use mipmaps in the future or what?

What was also weird was that the mipmap textures worked in FSX yet not in FS9 with the same scenery installed in both simulators (wanted a constant).

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Eric,

In general the advice is to use mipmaps, they are better for the performance and textures without mipmaps sometimes give blurry textures.

Did you still use dxt textures when you removed the mipmaps?

I haven't heard of memory problems due to mipmaps before. Do you have a lot of textures, so that they take up so much memory?

I got it working. Some of the textures were corrupted and made fs9 keep loading up memory. However, I have another question for you. Sometimes when flying, the mip maps of default scenery seem not to load and be corrupted. I plan on eventually taking out all the default scenery I can but want to know if there is a way to fix this. Thanks so much for your help.
