Question about FSX startup errors

I am curious if anyone else has this problem. Many times, when I close out of FSX and restart it, it will give me instantly, and error that some files couldn't be found, need to re-install. I have FSX + Accel. All up-to-date. This happens WAY to often.

I wouldn't care, because I just have to put in the Accel dvd and it always fixes the problem. My question is, what the bloody heck is causing this. And I am sure, knowing how things work, it is probably one tiny file, and yet I have to wait for a 20 minute install to fix it. It would be too damned convenient for it to tell me WHAT file(s) is/are missing. And the worst part, is since it installs the entire dvd to fix whatever the problem is, it totally overwrites many of my upgrades.... New scenery files, upgraded textures, all new mesh.

This is very irritating and so I wonder: 1) Does this happen to anyone else? 2) Would a virus scanner, drive optimization, or something like that cause this? and 3) Is there anyway at all, program, file list, anything, that would alert me as to what file is missing or where my problem is?

Like I say, I know it must be one tiny little 1k file somewhere that it is looking for that something must have happened to...and for that 1k file, I end up with 2-3 hours worth of headaches putting it all back together...

Thanks if anyone has any help at all on this.. Running in XP btw, and this happens at all sorts of times.. Sometimes right after I install something. Sometimes after I work on my system (nothing to do with fs) and sometimes I will be flying...shut down for whatever reason, and when I start it up again, maybe even instantly as soon as I close it, it will say something is missing.

HELP!!!! :) Thanks again!

Hi Greg,

Does the error message provide information about which files are missing and are it the same files missing all the time?

I must say I never had such an error, but hopefully the error message can clarify things a bit. This should not be normal at least.

That's the entire problem Arno... It is the most generic crap message MS could have possibly put there. Here it is, verbatim:

------------------
ERROR

Flight Simulator was unable to load some program files and will now exit. Please reinstall Flight Simulator to restore or repair the program installation.
------------------

I am sure no one else ever sees it. hehe...that is just how my crap goes. lol I get it ALL the time. I have reinstalled (again, the accel dvd repair fixes it...but may as well be full install, it overwrites everything I have modified scenery/texture wise... and takes about 30-45 minutes to install...)

I am just so sick of losing everything I have done to fix this, when you know it is probably (if anything at all....really) a little 1k file that means nothing. And probably always the same exact file. FYI, this message appears less than 1/2 second after I click to run FSX.

maybe a registry bug????

And as I am sure someone is thinking it.... if I knew where every file was that I have modified, I would backup those areas and keep them handy so I could just re-install them after having to fix this crap.... But I don't know where every scenery package and mesh package, land, sky, weather, etc.....are stuck... But everything I install (fsgenesis mesh (I bought it all), new land/tree textures, active sky, etc.... it all gets wiped.. :(

Thanks much if you have any clues....or anyone else.... I can't even work on my airport til I fix it...so hopefully someone will think of something....before I HAVE to do a repair (and speaking of repair...why the hell can't MS with all their programmers do what many companies do and figure out the problem, and ONLY fix that problem... idiots!)

Ahoi,

have you give the Program Filemon a try to solve your Problem.

Filemon save a log when a Program not will do what you like that it do.

Download Filemon, install Filemon, run filemon and the start FSX.

If y<ou have a Problem look at the Filemon.log.

Read the message. Save the log on another place.

Close Filemon and run it again and start FSX again.
If the Problem comes again - look the Filemon.log.
Is it every time the same Error?

Great minds think alike Sandra... and thanks for the input.. I was at work today thinking exactly this since I already have filemon installed and use it for other things... I am about to do this and will let you know the results....

Well, that proved pretty much fruitless. There are 100's of things that happen all in the first 2 seconds (or less) of you clicking to run FSX. And many of them look like greek to me. NOTHING to do with files being launched.

If anyone wishes to take a look at a few of the logs I made, I'll up them...But, it looks like I will have to break down and destroy my work again to fix it. :(

Ok...this is the damnedest thing....

Just for giggles, I ran the tweakfs registry checker/repair app. It showed that the registry entry WAS correct. It pointed to the right place. So just for giggles, I had it find the directory and overwrite the correct entry with the correct entry. (yes, you read that correctly)

I then told it to exit to fsx and viola!!! it worked perfectly. A great big WHAT THE FREAK moment!!!! LOL

Now, if I could just figure out this error I have gotten for the last month... while loading, an error window pops up.

Says this:

----
Error

-0.3499999940395355200000000 is greater than -.4000000059604644800000000

No clue why or when this actually started. But if I just click OK button (the only button) it then starts FSX as if nothing happened.. so not a big deal..just a small annoyance.

Spectre,

The error you have solved by applying the path with TweakFS might be another occurrence of the correct path registered in the registry but without a trailing backslash.

Well, that fix was short lived... Once again, it is doing the same thing (telling me to reinstall) and now the registry fix isn't solving the problem. This is so damned annoying.

I have been using the Instant Scenery icon maker. Seems that this problem happens a lot AFTER I use it to fix icons that are no good or that are missing from the 5000+ icons I have for my scenery objects.

I don't know what this program can possibly be doing that is messing up FSX, but more times than not, lately anyways...this problem has been around for me for several months and I just got Instant Scenery 2 weeks ago... it seems that after I use it, and quit fsx to reload the icons I am getting this error about missing files.

About ready to just give up on FSX and go back to FS9. It's ALMOST not worth it.

argh...I am happy and confused at the same time...

I thought to myself, I will make a backup of my fsx folder and the fsx folder from documents and settings folder... So I did. While the backup of the main fsx folder was still going (38 minutes left to copy to new hd) I clicked on the fsx file just for giggles....and what do you know... it loaded fsx with no problems. WTF!!!!!!!

This is maddening...
