• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

P3D v4 Question About Ground Polygons

Good morning.

I downloaded a small airfield off of Avsim. There is a ground polygon for the surrounding grassy area. It doesn’t change with the season, so it is very green this time of year when the remaining area is white with snow.

I had hoped to edit the file to add some winter textures to the model. When I open the ground bgl with MCX, I see a message on the bottom saying: 0 models, 0 object placements, 0 effect placements. I’m assuming that means the bgl file wasn’t created from a model. Is there another way of making a ground polygon? Is there another way I can this file?

Thank you.

Colin

An indication of which version of Flight Simulator (and possibly which scenery) would probably help with diagnosis.

Could it be it's a photoreal BGL? You first need to figure out what technische was used to make it before we can advise on what to do.

@Chris Eve and @arno

Thank you for your replies. Sim is P3Dv4.5. Scenery is for Roskilde (EKRK). It looks like it’s a satellite ground photo. I’ll see if I can figure out how it was made.

Thanks again.

Colin

If you can open the BGL file with the tmfviewer tool from the SDK you can be sure it's a photoreal BGL.

@GaryGB my mistake. It’s still freeware, but not Avsim. I found it here: https://www.onfinal.dk/ekrk.php

@arno opened the file with tmfviewer. It shows the picture of the ground. Does that confirm it’s a photoreal BGL? I thought I read that I can’t really for anything to edit the file. I can either make my own photoreal or make a model. Is that correct?

Thanks.

Yes, then it's a photoreal BGL indeed. Making a new photoreal BGL with a winter variant included would be quite some work.
