I'd put this in the right forum if I could figure out which one that was - scenery design? - just not sure so I'm putting it in "general" for now.
My product has a new feature that optionally assigns arrival gates to pilots, and requires that they get to that gate to complete the flight successfully.
The option is well received in beta with some reservations:
I give some direction in the form of heading and distance to the gate, but it's still quite difficult to find the right spot at poorly lit, poorly marked airports, or when there are a line of gates or parking spots all close together.
The best solution would be to spawn a scenery object at the "top" of the gate or parking spot so the pilot could visually home in on it when he gets close.
I confess I have no idea how to do this from a gauge and/or a DLL. Looks like maybe I can do it through SimConnect for FSX, but for FS9 I don't have much of a clue. I only know that somehow it can be done: a product I once used called Cargo Pilot would assign you a drop-off point and spawn a lamppost there and some other objects to make it obvious where you had to go, even cones around the edges to guide you into the spot. All done dynamically by the DLL when you started your flight.
I didn't see any facility in FSUIPC but perhaps I haven't looked hard enough.
Could it perhaps involve generating a .BGL file "on the fly" with the object and its location and somehow getting FS to know about it it without restarting? Or reading an changing the position of an existing object to place it?
Anyone who has a direction to point me in -- that would be greatly appreciated.
