• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Question on polycounts

Hi ppl.

As some of you might know: I'm building a scenery of Frankfurt/Main Intl. So far for my project. But now I'm in some kind of predicament. I have the chance to save around 30 (give or take 5) polys on pier a. But there is a catch:

- I'll have to remodel this part completely
- I'll have to realign the textures on the map (not really the big part)
- I'll have to do all the texture mapping for around 50 parts of this model again.

Well. My question is: Are these 30 polys enough to do all these things again and spend another 10 hours on the almost finished part of pier a?

Thanks a lot.

Daniel

Hi Daniel,

I agree with that. For 30 polygons I would not do all that trouble. Once you are able to put an extra zero behind it, it might become interesting. I don't know what the total polygon count is of your terminal, but I guess it will be a couple of hundred polygons.

Well, the part of which I'm talking has about 655 Polys (Excluding the newer, glassy part. It's only the old style thing with the Sky Line station on top of it).

Thanks, I wanted to hear that. :D

I'd say LOD is more important than 30 or so polys. If your LOD050 has 200 polys it shouldn't matter if the LOD100 has 3.000. :D ;)

Argh!

Well, that's it. I have to completely rebuild pier a. Damn the day, when I installed Google Earth and tested the measuring tool...

I miscalculated. Pier a is five metres to small.... :( Okay, I can use most of the textures without any changes, but I think I need to do the whole mapping thing again. :banghead: And by now, it was almost finished.

Or what about "Who cares?" and don't change anything (Except finishing it)?

Daniel

Hey - WHO CARES?!?!?!?

I would not give a damn for 5m! That's a few percent difference!

Hi Daniel,

I guess it depends on the rest of your design if 5 meters is important. For my Schiphol scenery I would find that error much too big. This is because then the 3D object of the terminal would no longer match the data I have for the markings on the apron for example. But if you don't have other data to match with, I guess nobody will see a difference of 5 meters.

In my EDLM-scenery 5m would mean some 50% of the whole building. :D
But I guess at EDDF ist's about 5%? ;)

Couldn't you just rescale the object?

Well...rescaling. I think the textures won't look right then.

The building is 40 metres wide in reality and mine is 35. But you really don't see it. I even think the sleeker one looks better. *g* I'll go on with this and when all is textured (only a few to go, sky line station is almost finished. At this moment, I'm rendering the last texture for this), I'll have another look at it.
