• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Randolph AFB Scenery for FSX

Half a year ago, I started working on the scenery for Randolph Air Force Base, my hometown for 7 years. I am using Google Sketchup for my buildings as well as my ground polygons. I will try to finish this project within the next couple of years, as the base has over 1000 buildings.

Here are some photos of my project:

Looking good Flyboy. Can't wait to see the Taj Mahal. Doesn't look like too many draw calls yet. Keep on reusing textures as much as you can. If the building count gets too high, you may start affecting frame rate.

Keep on building!

Jim

After several months of hard work, the Taj Mahal is almost complete. All I need now is to add the beacon and the night textures.

I have been working on this project for about a year now. Progress is coming slowly but steadily. At this point, I have completed all of the housing, former barracks, former fire station, bachelor officer quarters, and several others. I am also working on finishing touches for the Taj Mahal, Chapel, TLF, and the rest of the hangars. Besides buildings, I am placing each tree indivisually, and they are all from the default FSX library. Work still needs to be done, like the ground polygons, various buildings, an AI traffic system. If all goes well, a developmental release will be ready sometime soon.

After looking at my project for some time, I decided end my project due to poor quality and start from scratch. I decided to switch to blender for object creation and use gimp for texture manipulation. The first object I created was the former firehouse, and so far, I am quite pleased with my results. Here are some pictures:

Modeling and texturing is coming along slowly but surely. This is the landmark of Randolph, so I want to make sure I can get as much detail as I can without causing too much of an impact on performance.
