• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Red imagery

Let's take one step back, which tools did you use to make your GeoTIFF file(s)? Maybe you can specify some options there when you want to save the file.

Ok, I'm using GlobalMapper to create my Geotiff.

In global mapper I use the following procedure to make my geotiffs:

1. File>Export Raster and Elevation data>Export Geotiff...
2. Then under Geotiff Export Options I select 8-bit Palette Image (I also have the option of using 24-bit RGB but that makes the files huge). Then everything else on the page stays default (Palette=Image Optimized Palette, Always generate Square pixels is checked.
3. For gridding I choose how I want the file divided up.
4. Finally for Export bounds I use Lat/Lon to tell GM what area I want included in the geotiff.
5. Then I click OK and specific where I want the file created.

Here is the source image.

Hi Dan,

Maybe it is the palette? That is the only thing in your approach I never tried. I always use 16bit images, not 8 bit, as I find that reduces the quality too much in general. Have you tried it with non 8 bit images as well?

Globalmapper doesn't seem to have an Option for 16-bit as far as I can see. I just tried 24-bit again and it does work but the files are 4 times as large that way.

Hi Dan,

24 is fine as well, I might have confused that. Of course the GeoTIFF is a bit bigger, but does it also matter for the size of the BGL for FS?

Dan, use "capture screen content to image", and choose tiff, and "generate world file".

Btw, you wrote to say you didn't get my images? Did you get 4 emails from me with attachments? My outlook says they were sent ok.

For the bgl size it also increases by 4 times. But I guess there is no way around that. Now I've got to completely figure out the new autogen annotator.:p

If I use the screen capture method I'll be capturing imagery until I'm 70 years old. The project that I'm working on is MASSIVE!! (We're talking multiple dvd distribution if I can get everything to come together.) As for the emails, I only got 2 of the 4.
I really appreciate all the help that you guys always give me and everyone else here. I just wanted to say thanks again!!:D

point isn't to use that method for your project, point is that doing a screen capture will work, and you can then compare image formats to determine what to do with your exported images.

I guess I can't find a way to send you a big attachment, so I hope you can figure out your image issues, but my suggestion above would be as good as if you got my imagry.

Sweet. Thanks.

I dont include the Variation tag...but mainly because the scenery ive released so far has been very sparsely populated so there arent many lights on at night time, hence no reason to define a night texture, hence no reason to define the texture as 'daylight' only....

I dont think your problem is to do with your .inf file.

Definitely check youve installed the service packs and also ensure your image is in the correct format

If I wanted default FSX night textures to show what would I do? Is it as simple as adding the line [variation = Day]?
