• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Remote Water Runway

Hi,
I wanted to add a water runway to an airport that is presently only land based.

What I did was to increase the test radius to include the locations where the water runway will be. I then created a runway with a none designator with almost all options set to false.

The compile went OK.

My question has to do with making that runway appear as a start or land option within FSX. For example if one wished to start a flight there it must then be available and selectable within FSX flight planner.

Are there any details or instructions on how to go about this?

Many thanks for you help.

Add some starts for the runway?

Yes, I tried that. I made sure the Rwy was identified as 31 and that there was a start position on it. An NDB was added as well and it works.

Shown are two images, one of FSX with NDB clearly showing but no water runway. The other is FSXPlanner zoomed to the remote runway in the lake.

Are water starts even selectable in the World|Airports... menu?

I don't think they are. ??

Sure they are!!

Your Water Runway may not have a correct base value which should be 13 and not 31.

Where is the black runway link line?

What is the elevation of the lake which must coincide with the Water runway or it may not show up. If the lake elevation and the Airport ARP elevation are not the same then you cannot add a Water Runway to the Airport in question.

You only have one Start Location which is ok as long as you know how to set the recip/Secondary runway end using the correct attributes.

What airport did you associate the water runway to and is the runway nesting in the bgl that has a correct Airport Header.

Did you define in the XML that it is a Water Runway. That does not mean just using a Water runway texture but adding a complete Water Runway.

This runway is associated with a land airport - correct?

Is the lake elevation where the runway will be the same elevation as the land airport / runways?

If not, your will probably have major issues.

FS really, really likes everything at the same elevation.

Might be better to make the water runway it's own airport.

After looking around the Seattle area of FSX, which has lots of water runways, it looks like there are no airports that have both water and ground runways. Even when the water runway airport has the same name as the land based airport, they are actually two different ariports in FS. So perhaps it is better to separate these two. It may be due to elevation as suggested above.

I'd suggest making an entirely new airport, which is at the elevation of the water. Then all you need is the runway (Water type) and a start location at each end of the runway, which should be type Runway and assigned to the runway. That should work.

There are about 70 airports in FSX with both water and land runways.

From PHNL to PAJN to KARA to KDWH.

I haven't looked into them in depth in FSX.

But I have seen some posts lately about the water runways at PHNL not working the same as they did in FS2004.

In FS2004 airports like KARA or KDWH where the water runways is literally a large ditch - same elevation was not an issue.

FS2004 for PHNL and PMDY if you made the airports AI capable for the water runways, the AI would land, taxi and park a few feet in the air. A very common behavior when the runway elevation was higher than the surface texture elevation.

The best thing was to delete those runways from the main airport AFCAD and setup a new airport for only the water runways at 0 Ft/M elevation - I used PHNW and PMDW for some nice flying boat flights.

I need to look into that in FSX.
