• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Renaming textures?

According to the wiki, I should be able to rename textures, but I can't find this option?

All of the texture names are very long so when exported as 3DS, the names include a tilde.

In the event, I was able to achieve the requirement (which was to remove a single face with a unique texture) without exporting as 3DS. I deleted the texture (which deleted the face :)) and exported as an FSX model.

However, it didn't remove the bounding box :(

And, the bounding box is displayed in FSX:

Simply rename the texture within the Material Editor interface and it will save and export using that definition. Right in the same window where you define the save location. Click the texture name, edit it and watch it resort itself alphabetically.

The bounding box is calculated automatically. So there is probably another polygon that makes it big.

Yes, but it doesn't rename the texture files, only the texture references.

You manually need to save the textures after renaming indeed. That's also done from the material editor (texture tab). It won't happen automatically.

After renaming, the textures have no properties:

When I save, ir saves only the original textures.

Did you rename them on the texture tab?

Renaming in the material properties is like assigning a different texture.

No, I renamed them on the properties page.

I see it does work on the textures page.

Thanks.

Help.

I renamed all 98 textures and converted them to jpegs for GMax. This worked perfectly and I was able to import and delete the unrequired faces. Unfortunately, the GMax export changed all of the texture references to dds.

Converting to jpeg loses the alpha.

Before you made them jpeg what format they had?

If either dds or bmp, it should work fine with the new mdl you have.

They didn't exist.

However, I renamed and recreated the textures as dds and exported as 3ds. This solved the initial problem of the bounding box. There were two objects, removing the texture in MCX only removed one of them.

The good news is that I now have an FSX model instead of an FS9 one so the fps hit is much reduced and I no longer have the ground textures as a model, the ground is made by resample. :)

Thank you, MCX has again saved the day.
