• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX render transparency

I want to test a level of transparency of a box made in FSDS with alpha set at 70. importing the model into MCX doesn't show the level of transparency. Is there a way to set this?
Thank you.

In FSX, transparency work a bit differently.

The settings you see in ModelconverterX are "the" FSX settings, requiring Z-testing and appropriate framebuffer settings.

Hi,

It should still show normally. When importing a mdl the material settings should set correctly. Are you importing a fs2004 or an fsx mdl?

it's FSX and I've just placed it in the sim and the transparency doesn't show there either.
I'm now going to look at Farfy's tutorial on glass etc.

In that case I think the material settings in the mdl are wrong. For fsx modelconverterx just takes what is stored in the mdl. Probably if you apply the set default transparent option in the material editor it will work.

OK Arno, I thought at first it was because I was using poly in a boolean 'cut out' so I tried using just a box and a tube with default 'grey' colour and the alpha in the box at 150 and the result is the same 'no trans'.
I have to go back to the drawing board and find what I'm doing wrong. Thanks for you input.
I'll be back.

OK. All sorted now.
Seems that when a new material is added in FSDS that needs to have an alpha then the name of the new material must be 'trans' then set the colour and alpha level. Textures will, of course, have to have their own alpha anyway.
I haven't found any info on this except on going through Farfys tutorial word by 'word'
Arno, I'm sorry I brought this up on the MCX forum - it should be the FSDS forum.
Yes, the transparency shows right in MCX.
