• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Reverse throttle stopped working

Hi everybody,

I hope in this part of the forum I'm right with my question and find some ingenious developers who can help with the strange issue I have.

The problem is: "All of a sudden" (i.e. I don't know if it was after installing an add-on or changing configurations) reverse thrust isn't working anymore, on none of my airplanes (jets). In the outside view (e.g. on the default Learjet) I can see that the reversers try to extend, but close again immediately - and sometimes I can hear the noise for a very short time.

I tried everything I could find on the internet, like re-assigning the keys, uninstalling all the add-ons, etc including a completely new (parallel) installation of FSX ... but nothing helps: Even on the new installation with default airplanes I face the same problem. FSUICP is installed in the free version, the logfile says that the key is not programmed and the value was passed to FSX (guess that's as it is supposed to be).

I don't have any further clues what might be wrong. Maybe someone of you has some advice?

Thank you very much in advance,
Mick

BTW: Running FSX SP2 on a core i7 with 4 GB and NVIDIA 580 TXi

Hi George,
I had the overspeed message several times, and even a crash for this reason. But usually this didn't have any effect after starting a new flight. Would overspeed influence the function of reverse thrust?

EDIT: Maybe I have to mention that I'm running FSX under Win7 (64bit).

Check your throttle axis calibration. The reversers will not work when the throttle is not exactly at 0%.

Hi, that's one of the many things I already tried (not only once). Also pressing F1 first and then F2 (which is assigned) doesn't work. Meanwhile, I deleted FSX completely (followed by a registry clean) and installed it again, so that there shouldn't be any old settings interfering. Result after the brand-new setup: SAME effect, just as if it was a built-in bug.

@Walter (BaiterOne): It's funny that I have your response in the email but can't find it here?

You recommended to use the keyboard shortcuts "instead" - but that's what I'm doing all the time. Neither F2 nor Num_3 (which used to work before, as well) don't give me reverse thrust. In order to make sure that throttle is at 0 (in case of bad joystick calibration) I press F1 before trying to reverse.

Or did I misunderstand your advice?

Hi again, at least now I have a first clue: As Walter supposed already, the problem seems to be hardware related ... as that's the common denominator. When I saw that the cable ob my joystick (Saitek Cyborg X) was located very close to the monitors AC cable, I contemplated about the influence of possibly bad cable shieldings... and unplugged it in order to re-arrange the cables. In a test without any joystick the reverse thrust worked just like it should!

Unfortunately, relocating the cables didn't resolve the issue in the end. With the joystick I still have the same problem, but at least it's a first step out of complete confusion :teacher:

Sorry for the confusion, Mick_S.

I posted my reply, just to find that you had in the same moment posted your entry explaining about using F1 and F2 - which was what I was just about to recommend to you.

Rather than cause confusion - I then deleted my post, causing confusion anyway :).

Some 5 or so years ago, I had a very expensive (for me anyway) HOTAS, which I was quite proud of and used extensively for a year - until the cable for the throttle part got caught under the leg of my chair and some of the buttons stopped working and others seemed to be depressed continually. :(

I had to ditch the rather new-looking and shiny HOTAS and revert to a dusty old Sidewinder.

By the way, I never bought a new HOTAS - the Sidewinder is working well still.

Walter

Hi Walter,

no it wasn't you confusing me - with your remark you even brought me (back) to concentrating on the hardware. I'm a bit closer to a possible solution now, after finding out:
  • everything is fine (i.e. normal function) as soon as I unplug the flight stick
  • plugging the joystick out and back in gives me normal reverser function for a little while
  • but: by now I still have no idea how long this while is
  • but: I don't want to plug in and out all the time :banghead:
Only a few minutes before your post I tried a landing, saw that reverse thrust didn't work, un-/re-plugged while still rolling fast - and could use normal reverser function. Isn't that funny?????

I like my Cyborg Flight Stick very much (it's the one with the dual throttles) and it used to work very well for at least 2 years. I hope I get it back to functioning reliably, maybe with the help of some Saitek support.

If you have further advice, please let me know. I would highly appreciate additional ideas on solving the issue.

Thanks again
Mick

Try cleaning the contacts at the plug. I know that this can cause a recurring problem. Unplugging and replugging temporarily fixes it. Get a good electronics cleaner. Also check that the plug still fits tightly. The worst case would be a loose solder connection at the contacts but even that is repairable.

That's a good idea as well, Paul Dominique (btw you name's written differently in the signature and the alias ;)). Never thought about cleaning USB plugs before, but there might be other contacts inside the joystick as well.

Have a nice evening (respectively "day"), all of you :stirthepo

I don't know about all that forum signature stuff it gets me confused. I do know electronics since I have been building my own systems since before PCs and the internet.
I incorrectly called the cleaner electronics but it is more commonly known as contact cleaner, comes in a spray can and can be found at an automotive store. It is used to clean contacts for electronic fuel injection connections to the computer control box.
