• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Rudder Sluggish?

Hey all,

Im having an issue with a plane I am making. The rudder input seems sluggish instead of crisp. If I get in the Maule and do some touch and goes, I can hit the runway everytime, landing dead on center. But in my latest bird, she is all over the place, I can never get her to land right on the center of the runway. Further more, she will fly off the side of the runway when I am taking off, no matter what kind of fancy rudder input I put in the controls.

Any idea on what settings would enable me to correct this? It seems like she is sluggish in moving/changing course, while the Maule is crisp and reactive.

Hello Lionheart

It sounds like you either have too much yaw stability or too little rudder control.

There are quite a few entries in the air and aircraft.cfg file which could affect this.
If it was me, I'd start with the aircraft.cfg [flight_tuning] section (if there is one) and check for too low rudder_effectiveness or too high yaw-stability. I'd enter 1.0 for both, just to be going on with.
Opinion seems to vary about this, but I'd also check the [airplane_geometry] section to make sure there is a decent area of rudder and that it has a reasonable travel.

Now for the air file.

Entry 1101, Yaw section
Check that the first entry, weathervane stability, isn't ridiculously high (I suspect a light aircraft should be no more than 200)

Then I'd go to Cn_dr Yaw Moment - rudder(control)
and increase that until I got some response.

If there is no improvement:

If there is an entry 343 make sure it peaks around 1.0 and doesn't drop off too quickly on either side. A flat line at 1.0 should work fine. Same for 519 and 1636.

Have fun

I know what you mean. I've been messing about with flight dynamics for years and still have to start again sometimes.
