• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

Scaling problem

I am updating an aircraft from FS2002 and having a problem with scale.

When I first imported the model to gmax it said it was originally modelled in a different scale to mine which was setup to meters. All is fine . I have tinkered with the interior and exported to mdl and all looks good in FSX.

The trouble comes when I ungroup the exterior model, tinker, re-group and then export. For some reason in FSX the model is getting on for twice the size?it should be, throwing out my contact points etc.

I have tried selecting the exterior model and doing a scal re-set to no avail.

Any clues would be appreciated.

Keith

Hey Keith,

I wonder if they were doing this for FS9 and had it 16X scale (larger) for exporting, and then did the X file trick via Model Commander, then reset the scale in the ASM file. Just an idea.

I do not remember the exact way of setup for Gmax for either FS9 or FSX, but it must be right on for exporting, (for units setup for the exporter, not your own personal use in the actual modeling process). Bill Leaming I am sure remembers it like the back of his hand.

Have you tried measuring the wingspan with 'tape measure' and see if its right on?

Another thing I have never done is Groups, so I dont know how to help in that field either... arrgh. No help today whatsoever...

Thinking about it further, its probably doing it when I do the same with the internal model too, it's just that you dont see it.

Good point about the measure,I will try that. The odd thing is you don't see any change within Gmax, it's only after getting it back into FSX that it becomes obvious.

cheers

Going backwards

I ungrouped the exterior model then went through each part, resetting the scale on each one.

Now the model won't export at all?

I have looked in the log file but no error messages are there.

If I open the model prior to resetting scales it exports ok?

help!
cheers

Keith,

I wonder what would happen if you created a new scene and imported the parts into it without the groupings?

When I get texture library issues and wierd parts issues going on, I start a new scene, then import over the model parts into it and the bad parts are left out, including bad, no longer used textures and things. Sort of like 'cleaning' up the scene/project.

Again, I havent worked in groups before, so I dont know if they will import over 'with' their groups intact. Hopefully not.

Milton works in groups. I have seen how this appears and it kind of took me back. I wasnt able to work on the project in Groups.

No joy yet

I am still having the same problem.

I have a model with exterior and interior parts which exports and works
fine in FSX.

If I open the model in gmax, ungroup the exterior then regroup it, then when I export the scale is totally out in FSX with no error messages giving me a clue what the problem is. It still looks fine in gmax though.

Hmphh!

I am now giving up.......at least for the night!

In gmax check a part such as fuselage > properties. Are the dimensions correct? If not, try the old Utilities (hammer button) ResetXForm option. Read out part dimensions before and after.

Also ungroup everything and export-selected a subassembly, see how that fares. Add a calibration box with known measurement.

Good luck!

Mjahn,

I have checked the dimension is gmax and all is correct before and
and after the ungroup-regroup.

I cant use the reset xform as that throws all of my animated parts out of
skew.

Thanks for the suggestions though.

I don't know what I did but whatever it was it's stopped!!

One of those situations where I have tried so many things over and over i'm not sure what actually cured it in the end. Never mind, i'm back in business.

Thanks all for the moral support and suggestions.

Onwards and upwards!

Keith
