• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

scenproc: osm or shp files?

Hello Arno,
following your new UI scenproc version and the nicely done tutorial, I want to place vegetation and buildings on a small island using osm data. It looks though as if I can only use shp files to feed scenproc, is that true? How I I make shp out of osm data? If I export a certain area from the osm map using the export feature, I get an osm file. I can either work with that or convert it to KML, but I can't find a way of getting shp files. Is there one?

At the moment scenProc can only read SHP and DXF files. Reading OSM files is on the wishlist however.

You can download OpenStreetMap data in SHP directly, for example from this site:

http://download.geofabrik.de/

Another option is to load the data into a GIS tool, like QGIS. From such a tool you can then export it to SHP as well.
 
Sorry, didn't find the scenproc subforum. :o

Unfortunately those shp files from geofabrik include a whole state, but I guess better too much data than too few.
 
You could always load them in a GIS tool and clip it to the region you need. Loading a lot of data into scenProc means more processing time and memory usage.
 
I didn't use a UI tool yet, only used the basic tools like OSMfilter, GPSBabel or ogr2ogr. I might look into this to find a better solution for me.
 
Hello Horst,

The openstreetmap files (osm) have lots of information stored and are really big. GlobalMapper is a very great programm to load such mass of data and you can pick all the neccessary layers and export them to ESRI shape file format.

AfaIk that tool costs quite some money, doesn't it? Would be interesting to know if there's a simple freeware program for this kind of work.
 
Yes, a single licence for GlobalMapper is about $400,-
This is quite an amount of money but it's really worth it. I call it the Swiss Army Knife for GIS, you can do a lot of stuff with your gis files and the support is outstanding. There is a demo version too where you can try all the things.

You can give a try to all the available open source gis programs like I did, but at the end I had to rob my piggy bank for GlobalMapper.

I guess that makes sense. But I already processed 95% of my data, so I'll have to really think about if I need that tool. I might just do some additional manual work here.
But it's good to know how handy that tool would be. :)
 
Well, I found that Quantum QGIS can do what I need for free, so for this project that should be ok.

Unfortunately, Arno, I seem to have some issue with a test I was trying to run with scenproc.
Whenever I try to run my test, the messages say:

IMPORTSHP - Initializing input projection to proj (what is proj?)
IMPORTSHP - Reading SHP file...

and that's it. Nothing else happens, even though I did exactly what you did and the shp file is only 100kb small.

Any ideas what I might have missed?

I also use QGIS, it is a great GIS application.

You need to specify the projection of the shapefiles you are using. Or if they are already WGS84 you need to specify NOREPROJ. I'll add a better check on that parameter.
 
Unfortunately, now I don't get the first line, but the tool stops at importing the SHP file. I exported a couple of buildings from QGIS, so the file should be ok.

Not sure what is going on there. I would expect an error or so when something goes wrong. Maybe you can send the files for testing?

Did you find time to look at the files, Arno? I'll be away for the weekend, but maybe I'll work on the files again next week. Maybe you can tell me if the error is on my side or if there's a bug in the tool or a problem with the files.

I was away on business travel and on the laptop I had with me I could not test shapefiles. So hopefully I find some time in the next days.

Never mind, Arno. If we can solve the issue with osm files I wouldn't need this anymore.
