• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Shadows and Dust

In working with hardened surfaces I see two things that appear to be an annomally.

First
When landing on an elevated hardened surface the shadow shows at the elevation of the hardened surface not ground level.

Second
Even when the hardened surface is concrete you see dust blow up from it.

Are both these just something that we must live with or is there a way to not have dust and shadows show on elevated hardened surfaces?

On the first - shadows - I believe that that is more a "problem" of FS-X and how shadows are handled - part of the trade-offs that are made between "realism" and "playability".

On the dust blowing up, if I recall correctly, that is more an issue of the associated effects on the model, not the scenery.

Hmmm

I kinda understand the idea of association of the effect but where would i find out if that's the problem. As far as i know i have not associated any effects with the hard surface. Is it something that happens automatically or what?

From my (limited) experience, it's something you control in the aircraft.cfg file of the aircraft model you're using.

I don't really mind it that much since when landing I'm more concerned in just getting down, from the cockpit, and rarely "see" the effects .... (unless I sort of forget to extend the gear in which case the effect is very visible - along with an irritating scraping sound...)

Don't wanna go there

If the aircraft.cfg has to be messed with then it's not worth the effort. Creating a scenery that requires messing with the aircraft.cfg would be a complete disaster, since most simmers would have no clue how to modify the aircraft.cfg.

Thanks for the headsup

Hi Folks

Mark -
Shadow should only be displayed on the elevated hardened surface.
Displaying beyond the edge of the visual surface sounds like a size mismatch.

Check the size, (and units), of your hardened poly,
versus the size of the visual landing surface.
