• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

First project Shorts Skyvan with Blender

Hallo my name is Klaus and i just startet modeling with Blender.

i choose the Shorts Skyvan, because i found some good fotos for reference.

The picture shows the work from one day.

Just did some rough modeling to get a look for the proportions.

Did some testing with the windows, but i am not satified with the result.
It will be the first bigger task for me. I know there will be much much more.

Now let's go to nightlife here in Hamburg ;)

It is always good to have some holydays and its cold outside.

So i can spend more time on Blender and modeling the tail section
and playing with the render engine.

Right, try focusing on the modelling side of the job, rendering isn't useful for FSX.

Nice model anyway! Advice: try to reduce faces.

Don' t worry most of the time i try to improve my modeling skills. The rendering ist just a small part. What is a good goal for the faces to keep a god performance?

Glad to hear that!

Well, I should think like this: what will you see in FSX? Will this number of faces make a difference with a lower number? Remove any face which is in fact not needed!

Another advice: play with flat and smooth shading. This can have nice effects. Look at my Fokker: the metal covered fuselage side below the door concists of three faces, which continue at the fabric covered part. But at the metal, they're smooth shaded, and at the fabric flat. See the pic below, I hope it's clear enough.

I guess your Skyvan doesn't have fabric, but this is just a demonstration. Model a bolt in a hub the same way, only adding a loop and making one part flat and the other part of the cylinder smooth.

Smooth or flat shading is to be found in the T-bar, on the left and it can also be applied to single faces instead to a whole object.

;)

Hi Klaus, how does it go with your project? I am very interested in it. I like..not, I love it! Me and my friend have at the airport near our houses 5 Skyvans, so we can support you with high quallity photos of the aircraft or sound files. As I said, I like it, so I would be happy if I can help you with this beauty, also with modeling the gauges or 3D cockpit etc. And why? Today I flew in this beauty on co-pilot seat and it was amazing... I would like to have it in my FSX.
