• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSXA skinned mesh animations

I am experimenting with skinned-mesh-animations it it doesn't work - no movement at all.

I assigned a new material with the "skinned mesh" option in the material properties editor checked. I added some bones to the scene and animated them. Then I added a "skinned mesh" modifier to the part I want to animate and added the bones to it.
after a little bit of tweaking it looks quite nice in gmax so I added an animation tag and exported the aircraft.
nooooooooothing. :(

What did I miss? Is there a tutorial somewhere that describes the process?

Regards
Vitus

I assume this is for FSX?

What objects did you assign the animation tags to? In the DC-3 example provided in the SDK, they have 'l_wing_flex' anim tags assigned to all the left wing flex bones and 'r_wing_flex' assigned to all the right wing flex bones. Open up the DC-3 and take a look around, there are a lot of examples there using the animation system.

Also, not sure if this is important but notice the naming convention for the bones.

bone_left_inner
bone_left_middle_1
bone_left_middle_2
bone_left_outer

And same for right side.

During the export process did you check the box for skinned animations ("Export Skin")?

Hi guys,

thanks for your attention! I am not animating flexible wings, as the structure of the Electra was quite rigid. But I need this kind of animation for the Bowden cables of the surface controls. And I am indeed developing for FSX only and I ticked the "skinned animation" checkbox when exporting the model.

I just came across a tutorial about "skinned mesh animations" in the FSDS forum. Jonbouy explains the whole process quite clearly hope that will also help my understanding

I noticed that the bones need to be hierarchically independent from the the rst of the model and the weight for each vertex/bone combination defined as 0 or 1 - nothing in between! I'll keep you informed!

All the best!

Clarification - it's not the "FSDS" forum (FSDS is a modelling program), but the "FFDS" (for FreeFlight Design Shop") forum.

(and yes, even I get tongue-twisted on that..)

Hi guys,

I just came across a tutorial about "skinned mesh animations" in the FSDS forum.

Sry. 'bout that Felix! I hate akron. and abrev. - that is why I can't remember cryptic names.

b.w.
Vitus :D

FYI - it works now. I don't know why, or what I change, but it works. :D

Cheers,
Vitus

edit:
Gosh! As I think about it... It took almost four months until it magically decided to move. Maybe the solution for all our issues is just that - to wait for it to be solved.

One thing to note...for the skinned animation(s) to work you must have FSX set to "display advanced animations"

Yep. But that was checked at all times on my system. It must be magic! :D
