• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Testing persistence of a skydive download link

Aleutians.zip

1)
Right click on your Skydrive-saved file and click on sharing.

2)
Now click on get a link.

3)
Now create a link through view only option.

Step 5:
Now copy that link and paste it in any word pad or note pad and change redir with download as shown below:

Code:
https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=F3950C5BBD2BCFA1!681&authkey=!ABL6yB6lK7m1uqY

https://skydrive.live.com/download?resid=F3950C5BBD2BCFA1!681&authkey=!ABL6yB6lK7m1uqY

This is now the hotlink to download the file.

Hi ollyau.

The test will take some time. Skydrive, in the past, changed the download URL after a period of days. This makes direct linking ( hot linking ) of files impossible over a period of time.

If this method now allows a permanent link, we can use Skydrive for blogs, forums, and website linking of files.

For example, here's an FS2000-style elevation BGL: DEM4n00B_8.bgl

Skydrive allows 25 GB of storage space, with public and private files... and it's free from Microsoft.

Oh, no, it works. I got curious about the same thing at some point a while ago, and I have URLs still working.

I also found that you can also do things like embed images by putting the resid after https://storage.live.com/items/ and sticking it in the appropriate <img> tags. You can get it to download through that URL scheme as well, but it doesn't retain the original filename. This method may require you to have the file in a public folder, though. I'm not sure where the auth token would go in that URL.

And for new users, Microsoft reduced the SkyDrive storage space to 7 GB. Only existing users that opted back in (or were above a certain threshold) still have 25 GB.

Thanks for the info!

If the above links still work in a month, then I think it would be relatively safe to direct-link with the above method.

I didn't realize they reduced storage to 7GB. Still a big amount for file storage. I think I have only about 3GB used so far.

Here I'm trying to embed a file, using the standard Skydrive method:

HTML:
<iframe src="https://skydrive.live.com/embed?cid=F3950C5BBD2BCFA1&resid=F3950C5BBD2BCFA1%21735&authkey=AOZYvzwx_FcCYKc" width="98" height="120" frameborder="0" scrolling="no"></iframe>

It doesn't work with this forum, apparently, and I believe it's not really a hot-link, but a link to their standard viewing screen for individual files.

Here's the URL I used to embed the screenshot above:

Code:
https://storage.live.com/items/5CA1FD0CB7824AD6%21163

I did have to make the file public, though.

You can download the image (with its original filename) here: https://skydrive.live.com/download?resid=5CA1FD0CB7824AD6!163.

1 week later...

It's still is a valid link. I'm suspecting we do have a way to hotlink our files from Skydrive. This is very good news. Free file storage of 7GB, image linking, and now hot-linking of files.

Hi Dick,

The older Skydrive accounts before they did the makeover a year or so ago, had an option to get the 25 gig storage upgrade, I think you had to click a link at the time to receive it, I did, and while I told my brother in law about it, he forgot and was stuck with the 7 gigs. Like you said, it is still a great deal for free.

If I recall, the downloads have to be in a "Public" folder, or a folder which has been shared with the proper permission settings.

I have used Skydrive since it began, and use it to link to full size photos and video download links for my humanitarian blogs.

Cheers

Testing a picture link:

Seems to work OK.

Code:
The sharing link...
https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=F3950C5BBD2BCFA1%21783

Then use the Id to post the direct-link to the picture:
https://storage.live.com/items/F3950C5BBD2BCFA1%21783

That's Sammy: my master and Ruler of the Universe.
