• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

MSFS20 [Somewhat Solved] Poor DevMode performance after opening a project?

Hello,
I'm curious to know if anyone currently or in the past has experienced poor performance with more than adequate hardware immediately after opening a project in DevMode?

For whatever reason, I can run the MSFS on pretty much ultra settings and get an average of 70 FPS in most areas. However, as soon as I open one of my project XMLs (No matter the complexity), my FPS immediately tank from ~70 to 6-9 whole FPS. As you can imagine, this makes working on any project practically impossible.

This is just after loading the main project XML as well, not even opening the Scenery Editor.

Monitoring the performance in Task Manager, I've noticed something odd. When the MSFS window is selected, my CPU is only running at 2-3% and the GPU at 15% or lower. RAM is about 14-15 of 32GB. However, when I deselect the window (By clicking on any other window), CPU usage increases to 10-15%. Shouldn't this be quite the contrary?

The in-sim FPS monitor says I am limited by Main Thread with a response time of roughly 37ms. (EDIT: Before enabling DevMode, response time is ~1ms or less)

I'm running an i7 6700K @ 4.6ghz, RTX 2070 Super, and 32GB of DDR4 RAM.

This has been an ongoing issue since the Alpha, which seems to get a little worse with each update. Just a month or so ago, I was able to run DevMode at 12-20 FPS, which was at least manageable. Now, not so much..

Anyone else experiencing something similar? And yes, I did report this to Asobo many months back.

Some progress on this, but no definite solution.

I have found part of the issue. I run an MSI monitor that uses Free Sync. I have two additional monitors of a different brand that only run at 60hz. When I have the Project Editor window on one of these monitors, performance goes down to sub 10 FPS. If I move the window back onto my main monitor, I'm back to running 65FPS in DevMode.

I have tried disabling FreeSync and matched all my monitors at 60hz, but the issue is still the same. All of my monitors are ran off of my GPU, nothing off of onboard..

And I have my conclusion. I disabled FreeSync in my Nvidia settings, but forgot to do so on my monitor settings.

The issue for me, is related to FreeSync and displaying the editor menus on another non-FreeSync (I'm assuming GSync as well?) monitor. Disabling it completely via the monitor is the only solution I have found.

Having the editor menus on another monitor definitely still takes a performance hit of about 20-25FPS, but that leaves me at 45 FPS, which is actually workable.

So, now that raises the question, is this a conflict caused by MSFS (That can be fixed), or the monitors themselves..? :scratchch
