• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Starting with Sketchup

I've just stumbled upon Sketchup and ModelConverterX within the past few days and I am excited to start modeling with what appears to be some pretty easy software. One question I have is that I read about using a single texture sheet in order to save performance in FSX and I want to make sure I'm doing that. I haven't been able to find however how I would go about doing this? How do you make a single texture sheet using all of the textures for a building? As an example, I have some photos of buildings and I'd like to use the photos as the textures? Thanks!

To do this you can use a built in tool in SketchUp called combine textures or manual make them in photo editing software. I would use photo editing software if I was you.

1. Open your photo editing software Paint.net, Gimp, Photo Shop, Paint Shop Pro...
2. Create a new 1024 x 1024 project
3. Crop all your textures
4. Cut and paste all the textures on the 1024 x 1024 image (do not overlap textures also best to leave at least a small gap between all textures
5. If you run out of space create a new 1024 x 1024 sheet
6. Then save as .png or other format supported by SketchUp
7. Then place the textures sheet in SketchUp.

I have seen people use 4016 x 4016 but this can decease FS Performance; unless you have Direct X 10.
If you need any more help with SketchUp or don’t understand what I have whiten you can contact me

@simpson_king: Thank you for explanation such simple concept that my addled brain had been fighting with for some time. Believe me, it's so logical that I was trying to figure out the "catch" when the door was unlocked all the time!
