• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Step-By-Step OSM into Scenproc

Hi Arno et al;

I was wondering if we could have a discussion on best practices of finding OSM data from particular websites and reworking them into the file needed to import into Scenproc. I've read your tutorial and it's great but does not cover this necessary step.

Let's say one wants to do a metropolitan area - a medium to large sized city area. What would be the steps necessary to find the OSM data from the relevant websites? How does one trim that data down to what they need (perhaps to match a photoscenery)?

Thanks,
Anthony

Hi Anthony,

At the moment I do not have a step by step tutorial for that, but making one would be a good idea. I'll try to make one.

There is the Youtube video where I demonstrate scenProc. In that video I use OSM data as well. But I don't cover the steps there how to get the data ready.

Guys, thanks for the reply. I've downloaded QGIS and I think I see what you're saying by download the data as a shapefile and import it. Seems like I can trial-and-error my way from there.

However, would I be correct in stating that the US does not have a lot of building data for download? Seems as though OpenStreeMaps does not depict as many individual buildings as it does of the island in that video. I hope this is not the case because it could prevent me from working on the US cities I had hoped to create.

Not all areas have the same amount of detail in the data indeed. Here for the Netherlands a lot of buildings are included in the data, but for other countries it might be less indeed. If you look at the openstreetmap website you can see what is included for your area of course.
