• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

stock elevations for Islands

:stirthepoI thought I had read in this Forum about Islands, cut out with the "Polygon Hole", keeping there "stock" elevations. So far every island I have made with KML-1.10 is flat, not showing any changes, such as mountains and hills. I have seen what Holger,Jon and the team can do with there islands. So what am I missing. Right now I am working the coast line on the West side of Vancouver Island around Tofino and cannot get Clayoquot Island to "POP"! Any help on this head scratching problem would be much appreciated. Now is the time to be working on these Scenery's, because it's snowing out side. Thanks Ken

So the island appears correctly except that it is flat?

When you create an island it will expose the underlying elevation mesh and so maybe the standard elevation mesh in FSX is flat in that area and hence your island appears flat.

You could try downloading a more detailed elevation mesh from AVSIM.

In any case here is a section from the tutorial on creating islands.

Thank you MatthewS. Yes the islands I have done have had mountains 45M tall, and still nothing much resembling the stock mesh. I will look into the mesh, all though this is supposed to have 38-meter mesh installed. Thank you again Ken

MatthewS I did find out that I had left out FSGenesis 19.1 mesh for Canada. After installing it I put my C-206 amfib. on Clayoquot Island, at it's highest point. The Aircraft sat at 6.2ft. elevation. I have been putting my CVX bgl.s in Addon Scenery folders, this one called "North Vancouver Island". Should I be putting them in a different folder to get the mesh to work? It is a bit depressing to go to all the trouble to fix the wrongs that we were dealt out, and not have the outcome that you strive for. Thanks for the help again Ken

So with FSGenesis there is an elevation of 6.2ft, but without FSGenesis mesh there is elevation of about 0ft?

It sounds to me like the FSGenesis mesh just doesn't have the detail you want.

Also, do you have the FSX mesh complexity and mesh resolution set correctly? In the FSX/Options/Settings/Display/Scenery settings try a mesh complexity of 100% and a mesh resolution of 1m.

Good morning MatthewS. Well this is going to be a little embarrassing, CRS and all that! I think I found out, but not tested yet, what I am doing wrong. I have been forgetting to cut the hole in the scenery flatten for the island's mesh to pop through. Thank you for the help, and a Happy Holiday to all. Ken

13:30 pmt PS. So far no joy in getting the mesh to show through. I used "Airport_Backgroun_Flatten" for the area I am working on. I have to go outside and clean the sat. dish of snow!

MatthewS HELP!

As you might have guessed, I still haven't pinned down where I am making my mistake. If you have time to take a look at the KML. I will try and attach it to this post. I am waisting way too much time on this problem without any positive outcome. Thank you for any help you have time for. And yes I tried the recommendations in your last post. Thank you Ken

I looked at your BGL and I also built it again from your KML.

The island shape appears correctly but the elevation of the island is weird.

What I am seeing is the shoreline of the island appearing at about 190 FT and then in the center I see "holes" where I imagine peaks should be in real life. Its almost as if the island has been turned upside down.

I think its a data problem with the standard FSX elevation mesh data.

If you are using FSGenesis then maybe they have exactly the same problem too because I believe its all sourced from the same NASA SRTM data. Just that FSGenesis is higher resolution than what is provided with default FSX standard.

Thank you for taking a look at the problem. I assume when you re-built the folder you left out the flatten. I tried taking it out and ran into the same strange scenery. This isn't the only problem I have had with my island's. Every single one I have cut out appears the same. Thanks again Ken

Yes I deleted the airport flatten.

I really think its a elevation mesh issue for this part of the world.

I've created islands in other parts of the world and they appear properly, ie the elevation mesh rises from sea level as expected.

TMFViewer can be used to examine the elevation mesh. It's just a question of finding the appropriate DEM*.BGL file (DEM=Digital Elevation Model) in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Scenery

Actually the DEM file is:-

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Scenery\0101\scenery\dem0101.bgl

Open it in TMFViewer and then select "Jump/Lat Long" from the menu and enter 49.1322319623587 and -125.942508394335.

Thank you for doing my home work for me. I deleted the large flatten, and created a small flatten to fix the area that was acting-up. Now with your help I might able to figure out the correct way. I was away at the Grand Kids for the Holiday, so I haven't had a chance to jump back into the project yet. Thank you again Ken.
