Streamed Scenery??

Hey everyone, been a while since I came here and I'm not really sure where to put this question, so I suppose "General" is right...

I'm currently in the process of downloading & compiling some photo-scenery for the UK using FSET, and I'm quickly running out of HDD space. So I'm wondering if FSX has the ability to stream scenery from a DVD, or would that slow the system down?

Thanks for any advice you have on this, my Hard Drive thanks you too :)

Hi,

You can load a scenery from DVD. But that will slow it down a bit of course. Especially with a photoscenery I am not sure if it is a good idea.

Thanks for the reply Arno, I figured streaming would cause a slow-down. Any idea how the likes of Horizon and such manage to get the size of their photoscenery down to such a small size? Just having a look on their (Horizon) site and for the north of England, it only amounts to 22GB at 1.2m/pix

When making the BGL you can specify the compression level. Setting it at 85% or so gives a big reduction compared to no compression.

I don't know how big your scenery is now, but photoscenery tends to be always big. We made the whole of the Netherlands in 32 GB (resampled at 0.6 meter).

I set the compression level to 80% in the FS Earth Tiles.ini but even at that level, the scenery (Sheffield and the Peak District/Derwent @ 1m/pix) comes to 22GB. Would you advise setting the compression level even lower or would the resulting quality be rubbish?

Normally 80 to 85 is a good compression value, I would not go much lower.

Maybe you can inspect your files with TMFViewer to see if you can notice anything weird and see at which LOD they have been compiled in the end.
