• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Switching existing model to Blender

I initially started with blender only to do texture baking of ambient occlusions. I imported my DC8 VC into Blender and was intending to bake individual textures one at a time and continue compiling the model into FSX from GMAX. However, I found some parts were being mangled by the various converters I used. I ended up remaking one part in blender and I found I liked Blender a lot more than GMAX. And I still couldn't get complex shapes back and forth between GMAX and blender, no matter which program I made them in.

So after thinking about it for some time, I have decided to switch the VC development entirely to Blender. Although I will lose a fair amount of development time at first, I think I will more than make it up in the end. It appears not to have any of the problems that slowed me down so much in GMAX (although I guess I will probably find some new ones). I have now successfully compiled the partly completed model into FSX from Blender, so I think I good to go now with VC done all in Blender from this point forward.

I am assuming that there is no way to get my model into Blender with it's animations (not tagged, but at least present). I used MCX to pull the model out of FSX, exported as 3ds and then imported into Blender. So I end up without any animations and I just want to confirm there is no way around this before I start redoing them all. Am I correct in thinking there is no way to transfer a model into Blender with animations?

For your concluding question: no, as far as I know. I've been struggling with the same issue back in 2013 when I wanted to make a model FSX suitable using gmax.

The only format that keeps animations (that I know of) is .FBX. I have used it to migrate models from Blender to 3dsmax. But from gmax to Blender? I don't know...
