• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Taxiway Intersection and Apron Question

So two questions on best practice when Taxiways intersect each other:

1) for the curved centerlines that connect a taxiway to the intersecting taxiway both on the left and/or right, do you make that an additional taxiway path or do you make that apron with a hand painted line? (Basically, is there any impact other than visual in connecting it with additional taxiway points?)
2) If using taxiway points for the curves on intersections, there is often a small triangular shaped area not covered by the taxiway? How best to cover that? apron polygon?

For areas like run-up aprons, is there a way to model that with curves? the Apron object seems like it only supports straight lines? (Am I missing an option checkbox or somesuch?)

Thank you all!

Aprons can be circular, square and are configurable when you place them. Check out the properties when you select them.

Understood, Chris. But the run-up area I am trying to replicate is rectangular, but with fairly rounded corners - both concave and convex. Building out of circles and rectangles seems problematic?

Here's an example of what I am trying to build:

OK, just to say you can always try it. A circular Apron has many points on it that you can move to make concave and convex edges and combined with a rectangle and some taxiway paths you could do it. There may be polygons that you can use but I have not tried this yet.

You can add the "default" apron and CTRL-LeftClick to create points. Afterwards, if you select and right click on a point at an apron, you can also chose "transform to spline".

I got an error when i placed the default Apron, not sure why.

That usually means you've left an unallocated apron point that needs deleting. Look for a red apron point in the objects list and delete it and the error should go away.

Thanks i' ll try again to place the default apron.

Ahh - OK. I'll try that. Thank you both.

Anyone have any thought on the first question around best practice for the curved lines at intersections?

Seems to me, if you don't actually create a taxi line, and just paint them... well, there's won't be a taxi there for AI, and could cause issues in the taxi network. If that's not a huge problem, make sure the hole in your taxi paths doesn't create connection problems later to parking spots, which, if they don't get connected properly, cause errors in airports and crashes, at least in FSX, and I imagine the same problem will be true here.
