• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Texture? crazy

I am going a little crazy with FSDS to ADE usage. I eventually found (through the forum) how to add objects to the ADE list/object menu but now that I am going further with object design in FSDS I am hitting some problems. I will try to detail the method I am using as follows. Firstly my OS is Win7 with FSX Gold and FSDS 3.5.
In FSDS I create a rectanglular box and texture it with a 24bit 512x512 bmp texture located in my airport texture folder. Then I save it as bgl to my airport (EPGD) scenery folder. I then convert the bmp texture to dds format and save this to my airport EPGD) texture folder using ImageTool. Back in FSDS I then re-texture the model using the dds format and then save the object as MDL. In ADE I select the EPGD scenery bgl, open the file/model menu and add the object. All appears to be fine so I then add the object to my airport (in ADE), this shows on the airport layout so I then save and compile as normal. In FSX I go to EPGD and at the object location nothing shows. I have tried several different methods with texturing, changing bmp formats etc. but still the same result in FSX, nada. This is driving nuts, can someone please explain the correct procedure so that I can use ADE to locate and see my FSDS objects in FSX. :(

So I think that I have now got the hang of it. I make my model in FSDS and texture using the DXT1 or DXT3 format depending on transparencies. Then export as bgl and mdl to the correct folders. Using ADE to place model in lists/model area then use add/model I insert into ADE and place where needed. Save and compile and at last my object appears in FSX. So easy really but it took me some time to sas it out, maybe I am just dumb. No comments please. :D

One comment if you don't mind ... dxt3 is state of the art FS2004, for FSX better use DXT5 dds. And if you are using Imagetool then be sure to use the new one that comes with the FSX SDK, not the old one.

Mjahn is right. OR.... use the program called DXTBMP Google it. by Martin Wright. Latest version even resizes it correctly for you.

You can also try dds format. FSDS dosn't 'see' dds but can export to dds format.

You will find it easy to follow those who give you step by step instructions, rather than sayhing something like.... clck on add then add your bgl or your mdl. Wellllllllll, did they tell you where to find the word "add"? and what to do from there?

Makes it difficult- huh!? :) Bob (no- you are not dumb!!!- I'm a retired teacher. BTW................ test on Friday!) :)
